Illegal immigration issue simmering

The president has been chosen and he has declared to withdraw U.S. troops, and more or less tell Iraqi government to be responsible for their own safety. A large number of combat soldiers will be sent to the Pakistan area. The rest of the troops will be brought back home, remembering many of those troops have served two and three-term tours of military duty, and look forward to civilian life.

Since there’s more than 11 million illegal border jumpers, whom now take the jobs these returning soldiers need to come home to, but their jobs are being taken by these illegals. How is this situation being met and handled? How will the new president and this government handle this dangerous situation? If I was an illegal, I’d get back across the border. This is something that can’t be swept under the rug.

First of all, wre not making you stay here, your choice, you know what we have to offer, is better than what you have in Mexico. Be honest with yourself, appreciate what chances for a better life you have, instead of complaining! Your ungrateful attitude, persuades us not to give any of you, chances at all. Keep slapping us in the face and you'll learn fast were thru helping. You think none of us will do your job? That shows how little you really know. Some have gratuated from college, although many havn't, so lets face it they would do your job in a heartbeat. If you still can't see the truth then go home were everything is so wonderful, living without any of our help, you'll soon realize America wasn't so bad after all. To (CASCADE EFFECT)I agree with you 100%.
If the mexicans, and others, want to live in America, I feel they should learn how to speak English. Were making special privilages in their lanquages whenever using phone, TV and ect. is't riduclous. This is suppose to be America. We are slowing becoming a country that says it's ok to live here, yet speak only your lanquage, this proves you don't want to leave the old life behind and start a new life in America by speaking English. Wake up people, there are already places in California that do not speak English at all, and when driving and getting lost in one of those areas it's a nightmare, As NO ONE SPEAKS ENGLISH. Why did we let this happen.Used to be one had to learn to speak, take test on US History before one could live hear and be US Cit. It has gotten so out of control in certain areas its like your no longer in U.S., more like a foreign Country.

First things first: Who gave you a library card? Who allowed you to use their computer and internet connection?
Hard work? Right, like you and your people were here to build the railroads and freeways? Ever been to Disneyland? I don't think you and your kind did the back breaking work choking trees out of the forest but stooping to pick mushrooms...is that more to your liking?
Sorry but you and your racist views have clouded your judgment. Azatland is a fairytale, a legend created in the minds of malcontents, to only keep people (like you) confused and full of false hopes.
Please go home and take both your racist views and inferior attitude with you.

What Raza is talking about wrote on Dec 19, 2008 7:00 AM:

Although the spelling is wrong on the post I think this is what she is talking about:
"In Chicano folklore, Aztlan is often appropriated as the name for that portion of Mexico that was taken over by the United States after the Mexican-American War of 1846, on the belief that this greater area represents the point of parting of the Aztec migrations."

Not only was the spelling wrong but so is the geography, the Coast was never a part of that fairy tale!

Once again, the lowbrow intellect of the transient borderhoppers rears it's ugly head.
I won't bore *you* with a lesson in history 101 but rest assured, North America never belonged to mexico, rather the native Indians were here long before Spaniards conquered what is today -=KNOWN=- as mexico.
Mexicans are nothing more (no offense) than a mutt race, a mixture of Spaniards and native Indians....In other words, the native people of mexico were conquered, a defeated people, that has never come to grips with their identity.
Everything (culturally) the mexican people lay claim to are nothing more than adopted social habits.
(I don't make this stuff up, it's all right there in the history books)

Sorry to burst the bubble of your false sense of Machismo.

if you think illegal immigration is not such a big thing consider that over the last few years large movements in California and other southern border states push for more and more "mexican" rights....when a school allows its students to take down the U.S. flag and fly the mexican flag instead you dont think that should be taken seriously? The illegals dont want to be here and become american they want america to become THEM.

what is so hard to understand about the word "illegal?" Come here legally or you don't have a leg to stand on. So what if you are wanting to make a better life for yourself; Americans want that to but most of us choose to do it within the framework of the law. What makes you illegals so special you dont have to follow the law. Go home.

how all you lazy people here in this town want to blame illegals on why you can't find a job, go to college further you education, quit doing meth, go out and look. I have lived here my whole entire life and there have always been a large population of people here who can't "find" a job mostly cause they don't get off their butts and go looking. Illegals are not the problem here. Also to Rebecca funny how your ancestors probably came here and stole land from the indians and now because you've been here longer you are more deserving? By the way at least mexicans came from this continent..would you like indians telling us to go back overseas? They come here to feed their families now tell me if your family was the ones going hungry would you not break the law to come here and make money so you could feed the? It's called compassion people..get some. Go back to college and quit whining I am not unemployed but then again I have an associate's degree.

But your rants won't fall on deaf ears so I'll tell ya what: Next time someone comes up to my place looking for work or stops me, looking for work, I'll be sure to do my part and have them arrested *AND* deported, regardless of their nationality/race/color.

While I agree with Jeremy that most of Mr. Martin's arguments are absurd ILLEGAL immigration is a big issue in this country. I have no problem with people from other nations working here but they should follow procedure. If you want to work in the US apply for a visa. If you can't get one stay home.

Opinions are like noses wrote on Dec 10, 2008 2:20 PM:

After reading through the many and varied responses to Mr. Martin's letter, I find it interesting that not one person addressed another component of employed, undocumented workers. . .who are the employers hiring workers without the proper documentation? Do not put the blame solely on the workers, spread some of it around to those hiring them.

As to the treatment of migrant workers, I worked with migrant and seasonal farmworkers in So Illinois in the late '70s and saw first hand how employers would lure workers to harvest the fruit and vegetable crops with a promise of $XXs per bushel "bonus", etc., IF they stayed until the end of the season. More often than not the employer would not close the season until long after the families had to return home to Texas or Arizona so their kids could go back to school.

Can you imagine the UAW allowing that to happen with the auto workers?

This argument is just absurd and the authur should be ashamed of himself. The soldiers returning home will either still be in the military, receive unemplyment and top notch job placement assistance, return to school at little or no cost to them or simply return to their old jobs. You do know the job they held before they left, by law, will be held for them when they return. Did you also know that there is program called Helmets to Hardhats that helps military members transition into apprentice programs if they wish to take on a trade. Next time do a little research before you spew such garbage.

TO GOT MAESTRA: I do not think that anyone would disagree with you on this one. Mexicans are very hard workers. All that born citizens of the U.S. and all of the LEGAL people that are here are asking is that all of these people who come to the U.S. do it legally. This is the best country in the world and the illegal's are dragging it down very very fast. If you want to work here and be a U.S. citizen, get the legal documents and be legal. I don't think that is too much to ask from anyone.

Been there wrote on Dec 9, 2008 12:25 PM:

Ignorance is bliss--and this thread is rife with it. First, illegals take lots of jobs that citizens want--construction (heavy equipment operators, drywall, carpentry, framers, roofers, laborers), landscaping, trucking, auto repair, restaurants, hotel work--so the field work isn't even a point of discussion. All the families in this area who depend on these kinds of jobs must be prepared to find another line of work because the illegals are replacing you at a lower cost, as we speak. Their children are filling our schools but as the law enforcement officer pointed out--next their gangs will be filling our jails. They already do--stabbing, hit and run killings, drug rings--all recent crimes with illegal nationals hurting local citizens. Before you buy all that "only take jobs that others don't want" take a close look at what has happened in Chicago, North and South Carolina, and California after large numbers of Mexican and Central American national began moving there. Crime rates go up and wages do down. Those are established facts.

To Coos Bay Resident wrote on Dec 8, 2008 7:01 AM:

You forgot to complete the sentence...

"They do the jobs that the white people do not want to do." for substandard wages and in such poor condidtions.

IF you had ever known anyone that worked in "the fields," you would know why most people don't want to do it. You go ahead and work at a back breaking job in the hot summer sun, for 12 to 16 hours a day at less than $4 per hour and NO benefits whatsoever. My Grandpa is a LEGAL mexican worker that works in the fields. He won't let any of his family work in the fields because he knows first hand how crappy it is. In fact, most legal mexicans will not work in the fields.

So next time you want to shoot off your mouth, make sure you actually know a little bit about what you are talking about. And quit being such a racist, there are people of every race drug addicted and on welfare everywhere.

You are ok with these people abusing the Welfare system. They brag how they make more money on welfare than they would working. I guess all you have to do in Coos(BOOZE)County to get on welfare is be a drug addict and drunk... I had a social worker tell me they get the benefits first. They call it "REHABILITATION".

I would rather that the illegals would participate in their own nations success and take the woodwork with them.they can come to this country like my great grand parents in 1886 through immigration ..they do not have a right to be here if illegal or to work, Arnold came here the right way check it out and learn.

It was recently discovered that Obama's aunt is among the estimated 11 million people living in the country illegally.
Immigration contributes to our society. We promote LEGAL immigration like that of Arnold, George Soros and Arianna Huffington. When Congress failed to pass comprehensive immigration reform in 2007, the Bush administration kicked up its enforcement of the immigration laws already on the books. The government also hired more people to process applications for immigrants who want to enter the country legally. And to "Solution" The U.S Army has a process of fast-tracking Green card holders to become US citizens!

Dear Coos Bay readers,
Mr. Martin reminds me a lot of the anti-Japanese immigration advocates of the 1920s in Astoria (and elsewhere but I'd like to keep this one close to home). No matter your target, if you are uneducated of facts, you will find someone else to blame your troubles on. "Illegal immigrants" are not the problem. The problem is a poorly planned national program to bring immigrants out of the woodwork and ALLOW THEM to participate in this nation's success. I"m attaching a quote of facts below as well as a website to read more into how much money "illegal immigrants' actually pay into our system--a system that is so entirely broken that even those who want to participate legally cannot.

" Close to 8 million of the 12 million or so illegal aliens in the country today file personal income taxes using these numbers, contributing billions to federal coffers"

The gangs are much worse that the old "bloods and crips". I think your tune, LB, will change as soon as the hispanic gangs become more prominent in your area. Don't be ignorant, stop the problem now. What a limited view you have. Who pays for these illegals? They don't drive with licenses or insurance, so if in a car accident who pays, we do. They go to the hospital, no insurance, do you think they pay the bill? Nope we do. There are 300 million people in the US 11 million illegal. Why do you think we have enough money to support more just because they want a better life? You need to get your rich head out of your well rear-end and see that we cannot just keep taking in people who have little to contribute. no other country on the planet allows this.

Ladybug Gardener wrote on Dec 4, 2008 4:32 PM:

These 'illegals' are looking for a better life for their families both here and back home. They are willing to work and should be allowed to legally. They are mainly working jobs that are undesirable even to servicemen and women returning from overseas. Why are you so elitist? Any immigrants have a right to seek a better life. Many deportees have families here they have been supporting; what are those mothers and children to do? I believe these people have the same right to life and employment as we do. What a waste of time and money to keep people out of the U.S. By the way - no wall will EVER keep the people coming from Mexico; as long as they believe there is a better life across the border - they will risk everything to make it. Please, just embrace these people. They are good. They want to work. Mexico used to be a lot further north than it is now and they have every right to be here as you or I. The governor of California wasn't born here...Are you going to deport Arnold? They just want to survive - give them a chance!
