Myrtle Point’s boys basketball team got a win in Tom Dill’s first game as head coach, beating visiting Oakland 59-55 on Tuesday.

“We played good defense,” Dill said. “That’s what kept us in it.”

Myrtle Point trailed by one entering the fourth quarter, but finished strong with 21 points in the quarter against the team ranked fourth in the Class 2A preseason poll.

Scott Clark had 19 points and Willy Looney added 13 for the Bobcats.

Tyler Fugate had 13 points for Oakland.

Coquille tops Irish

Coquille had four players in double figures and beat host Waldport 61-50 on Tuesday.

Daniel Muntifering had 19 points to lead the Red Devils, while Joseph Savala had 14 and Joe Harris and Ryan Young 10 each.

Adam Clark had 21 points for Waldport.

Cruisers fall

Canyonville Christian beat host Powers 55-32 Tuesday night.

Kiefer Allen had 16 points to lead the Cruisers.

Stanley Hsu had a game-high 20 points for Canyonville Christian.

Bruins top Braves

Brookings-Harbor had five players in double figures and beat visiting Reedsport 91-40 on Tuesday.

Kenton Bansemer had 19 points and 16 rebounds for the Bruins, while Chase Bansemer added 16 points. Fred Corpening scored 14, Joseph Tonn 13 and Jacob Eszlinger 12.

The Bansemer twins and Corpening are returning starters from the team that finished second in the state tournament last winter.

Cody Savey had 19 points and Ismael Osorio 10 for the Braves.

Reedsport beat Yoncalla 63-39 in an endowment game last week. Savey led the way with 22 points.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Bobcats win opener

Myrtle Point beat visiting Oakland 46-36 in the season opener Tuesday.

Sam Sanders had 17 points to lead the Bobcats, who pulled away by out-scoring the Oakers 20-11 in the second quarter.

Chelsea Spencer had 10 points for Oakland.

Red Devils win

Coquille opened the season with a 44-33 win at Waldport on Tuesday.

Allison Cook had 22 points to lead the Red Devils.

Reba Eggert and Maddie Webb had 10 points each for the Irish.

The Red Devils are coming off their first trip to the state tournament in recent years, and Coquille coach Jennifer Sproul said Tuesday’s game was a good starting point for her young squad.

“We can only get better,” she said. “We have a lot to learn. We’re working hard enough. We’ll be fine.”

Cruisers get victory

Powers outscored Canyonville Christian by a combined 18-3 in the first and third quarters and rolled to a 48-22 win over the Pilots on Tuesday.

Liz Linderman had 15 points and Nicole Bittner 11 for the Cruisers.

Warriors top Pirates

North Douglas spoiled Pacific’s season opener, beating the host Pirates 36-17 on Tuesday night.

The Pirates outscored the Warriors 10-5 in the first quarter before struggling on offense the rest of the night.

“We ran out of steam a lot faster (than they did),” said Pacific coach Tiffany Freitag. “Our shots were coming up just short.”

North Douglas led 13-10 at halftime and outscored the Pirates 17-2 in the third quarter.

“The third quarter kind of hurt us a little bit,” Freitag said. “We’ve got a ways to come. It was a solid start.”

Jenine Manning led Pacific with nine points.

Rochelle Hescock and Kaitlynn Rice had 12 points each for the Warriors.

Bruins top Braves

Brookings-Harbor beat visiting Reedsport 57-22 Tuesday night.

Ciara Freeman and Chelsey Hannan 10 points each for the Bruins.

Jessica Cooper led Reedsport with 14 points.
