Coast Guard rescues endangered boaters

The U.S. Coast Guard assisted three people whose boat lost power near the mouth of the Umpqua River on Sunday.

According to Coast Guard spokesman Justin Uyttewaal, a 19-foot boat ran out of gas as it was approaching the bar. When the three passengers tried to start up a secondary engine, a swell came up and shut off their power. The boat didn’t have a radio, Uyttewaal said, but a Coast Guard watch tower saw people on board waving for help, at about 2 p.m.

The Coast Guard sent out two boats, a 47-footer and a 25-footer. When Coast Guard rescuers arrived in the area, they found the boat on the North Jetty, as well as the three passengers.

“They were fine. No problem,” Uyttewaal said. “They didn’t make it to the bar. They were very lucky.”
