There was a time when an American was a person who loved God, family and country. If you recall our Founding Father’s men of honor and sacred honor who swore to do what was best for the people. Our Constitution was based on the Bible. I think that if those men had been able to see this generation, they would probably have let the British have the country.

Would you have paid that price to see God thrown out of schools and government? To see homosexuality and abortion? Presidents who lie under oath, who cannot pass a FBI background check, who want children taught sex, evolution and anything but God? Think about it.

To winter in the East, ragged clothes and shoes, lack of food. Yes, they gave us a great country and that because they studied their Bibles and they believed in God and stood on his word.

If you read Exodus 18:21 you will find how our government was formed. We the people are to pick out capable, Godly, honest men who hate bribes. From where I stand we have done a lousy job of choosing our leaders.

Remember when we had blue laws? If you needed an abortion, it was in secret. If you chose homosexuality, it was in the closet. Not anymore, it’s all accepted and supported. Now the young people are being looked to for promoting what God calls an abomination. Does anyone really think we will not be judged? I think that unless we bring God back, we ain’t seen nothing yet.

To Nicole,(answer to your question) the Holy Spirt came over the men who wrote the passages you are referring to.(they wrote, but the Holy Spirit guided them)
I feel our country was blessed because we believed in God and stated so, (Our money says in God We Trust,It was FRANKLIN'S BELIEF THAT ONE MAN COULDN'T DO IT ALONE, BUT A GROUP OF MEN, WITH THE HELP OF GOD, COULD DO ANYTHING. THE lATIN ABOVE THE PYRAMID, ON OUR MONEY SAYS: ANNUIT COEPTIS, means, "God has favored our undertaking."
Darrell your posting has alot of truth and very good points ! I totally agree with. Since we are taking God out of our country that he blessed, now he is allowing us to experience what life can be without his blessings. I have always felt 911 and New Or. disater was allowed by God to wake us up and try to turn us back towards him like our country first did when it was new. Lets face it we have been pulling away from God more each day, the more we do it the more disaters we will face as his hand of blessing is gradually uncovering us.

The Christian is not called to unconditional approval. We really can love people who do things that should not be approved of. Balancing love with discernment. Do not give what is holy to the dogs: Dogs and swine in this context are those who are hostile to the gospel.

I hope you are willing to stand by your words when judgement day comes. Don't worry, God will love you while he watches you burn for judging others!

Now how silly and hypocritical is this? No loving God would do this and why would we worship your God if he is not loving? What's the point again?

Nicole Ann wrote on Dec 19, 2008 11:59 PM:

FYI, I love God and believe in him very dearly. However I also believe that people should not judge others or tell them their choices will send them to hell. I do have one concern though about the bible. Someone here already mentioned that Jesus did not write it. It was written by several individuals, which has several contradictions. So isnt fair to assume some of that which was written was that individuals opinion rather than fact? Just a thought to theorize on.

Point 2. You don't choose your sexuality. You can say what you want about that statement, however it doesnt change the fact that it is true.
Point 3. Abortions done in secret often lead to death of the mother due to lack of sanitary conditions, so you are wishing death on someone, nice.
Point 4. "Under God" was not in the original Pledge of Allegiance it was added several years after the writer, an ex-reverend died and relatives of his said he would disapprove of the addition.
Point 5.God gave us the freedom to choose, not so that we would follow others blindly and not believe what we wish.

Or would learning how another faith works mess up your thought process.

eramus wrote on Dec 13, 2008 11:06 AM:

The thing that stands out most in this whole conversation is that when critics of religion speak, they cannot do so without being sarcastic and verbally abusive. Your snide comments and insinuations that anyone that does believe in God is some sort of knuckledragging half breed only makes you look like condescending snobs. For some reason you find it impossible to say "I dont like religion" without making it a personal attack on the person that does.

Sad.

The 'point' missed was how can anyone prove that their religious belief is right and any other one is wrong? Our Constitution wisely separates Church from State largely because of that truth.

You apparently can very easily believe only one Deity exists, and that all the other Gods do not, which makes you just one small step away from being Atheist.

Think about it.

moonpenny wrote on Dec 8, 2008 7:48 PM:

Our Country was founded for the freedom OF religion - not freedom FROM religion. Look at our world without God - the killings, adultery, moral emptiness, coveting things that should be worked for... a person could go on and on. Our Constitution provides for freedom of speech - and Christians have the same freedom as all others. Non-believers are not forced to church, your income is not taxed to support the church. And those that are truly in need of help - where is the first place they go? Straight to a Church. If you don't want to believe in Christ our Lord - don't celebrate Christmas or Easter - or take the paid holidays. It seems that the quietest ones are the Christians - we just keep quiet and keep taking it. It's time we stood up and shouted loud and long!

Since everyone's throwing quotes around, here are a couple

"Christianity neither is, nor ever was, a part of the common law" (T. Jefferson). "All persons shall have full and free liberty of religious opinion; nor shall any be compelled to frequent or maintain any religious institution." (T. Jefferson, from the draft constitution for the state of Virginia). "I am for freedom of religion, & against all maneuvres to bring about a legal ascendancy of one sect over another." (T. Jefferson), and finally, "Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between man and his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legislative powers of government reach actions only, and not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should "make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof," thus building a wall of separation between church and State." (also by Jefferson)

The moment we start to impact the life of another we enter dangerous waters. I agree that religion to most is a good thing. Like anything else it get's twisted and manipulated by people who are "evil." Evil, as we all should know isn't always easy to spot. Some times we miss it because we are to close. If the british had the country we'd be governed by a church.

Thomas Jefferson proclaimed that human equality is a gift from GOD:

He wrote that he was not expressing new ideas or principles when he wrote the Declaration of Independence, but was rather giving expression to something that had become settled in the American mind.
John Adams wrote: "What do we mean by the American Revolution? The war? The Revolution was in the minds of the people...a change in their religious sentiments." Those religious sentiments were forged in the sermons of the Great Awakening.

There is no reason that living according to the bible should offend somebody so I apologize on behalf of those who have mis-represented their faith. And I know I am often times one of the people who does not love the way Christ shows it. We should not be condemning others for how they live when we are still making mistakes. 1) Read the bible that you believe in: Start with John 8:2-11. If you are perfect then you can condemn others for how they live their lives.

2) Watch the movie "Lord Save Us From Your Followers". The man who made it is also a Christian and it shows us how articles and comments like many of these are percieved by those who do not hold the same beliefs.

ANNEOFOREGON, it’ true that hypocrisy has tainted and poisoned religion. There are huge deviations in a lot of churches and religious circles from the principles laid out in the bible and often there is a profound difference between religious doctrine, which is made through the interpretation of mankind and the actual written word. The result is a broad mistrust and ill-will towards God when it should serve to point out the flaws in mankind

The entire reason Jesus came to earth was that the hypocrisy of the Lords followers had perverted the teachings of the Old Testament so badly that the entire world had been led into sin. Most people however, still can’t get past this and completely miss out on what Jesus did for them on the cross. You can hate me and those that believe as I do all you want, I will still continue to pray for those that have been hurt by the hypocrisy of those who use religion to benefit their own agenda’s. I will also continue to pray for those doing the offending so that they may see the harm they cause.

Trish made an excellent point in that there is a direct correlation between the presence of Christianity and the prosperity of a nation. Look through the numbers sometime and you’ll not only find that the most prosperous nations are Christian, but that the fluctuations in Christianity and the trends in poverty are linked as well.

Mike also hit upon something very important when he mentioned relationship as opposed to religion. So many Christians have used religion to try to enforce a set of rules and beliefs on people in an attempt to force them to accept their views and this is both sad and unfortunate. Knowing Jesus and loving God is not about hate, rules, exclusion or persecution. It’s knowing that we are here on this earth not by accident but for a purpose and that is to support and help one another regardless of lifestyle choices or beliefs. I often wonder how different the world would be if the hypocrisy was left out of Christianity. It’s so sad that people tend to hold on to the spirit of religion rather to embrace the power of relationship with Christ.

I don’t usually get involved in the religious threads on these boards, not because I am ashamed of my faith, simply because the content here is always so grossly ignorant and hate filled.

But I have to say to Mike and Trish how much I agree and applaud your comments. Fact, the Bible provides guidelines for every aspect of American life (and any other prosperous nation I may add). From morality to government and even economics and business, it’s all there and anyone who has any real knowledge of the Bible can tell you that. The fact is that most people opposed to or offended by Christianity have little or no idea of what they are taking about. Most either do not understand or have been hurt by religion at some point in their lives, therefore those of us who believe will continue to pray for those individuals whether they care or not.

I served in the Military so that you may enjoy your right to believe as you wish and I think that if we are such a free thinking society, that we should do that and leave others alone. Compassion! I was an atheist for 20 years and spoke often on the subject with Pastors and Preachers. They were unable to sway my views.

I can safely say today thank you God for Grace.

Today I work hard for my church.

So you see God forgives and you move on in the light. My life has improved 1000 fold since I finally forged a relationship not religion with God.

I can tell you that no one knows what a "generation" is in the Bible.

It sounds like you have read or at least researched some of the Bible.

I have been taught that you have to use 20/20 vision with every verse:
20 ahead and 20 behind the verse you quoted!

i wish more people would believe in God. someday they will realize this. if there is no God, how did you get here?hmmmm... imagine that... i think God should be in everything you do, church and state. and it doesn't matter if you take God out of your government, he will still always be there. hmmm, did it ever occur to you that we are in such a recession is that most of the population decided they didn't need God? i believe he is punishing all of you for those very reasons. how many people world wide are losing their jobs? how many that have God in their lives still have jobs? yeah, that's what i thought. God will always be there. that i do know, for a fact, as i not only believe, i happen to be someone who has had a second chance at life, and have seen him personally. so you believe what you want, i, along with 90% of the population, will believe in our God.

"Our laws and our institutions must necessarily be based upon and embody the teachings of the Redeemer of mankind. It is impossible that it should be otherwise; and in this sense and to this extent our civilization and our institutions are emphatically Christian." - United States Supreme Court, 1892.

God needs to be kept privately in ones heart. Organized religion is bad for humanity. It is at the heart of wars and death.

GOD BELONGS IN THE CLOSET wrote on Dec 2, 2008 8:03 PM:

It is morally reprehensible to praise and accept salvation from a vain and jealous god who supposedly killed thousands of children, both infants and unborn, when He flooded the earth and destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. Also, why are Christians still waiting for Jesus when he told his disciples 2,000 years ago that their generation would not pass before his return in visible glory (Matthew 24:34)? The Revelation was clearly written to apply to the Mediterranean region of their day, not ours. Even Francis Bellamy, the Christian author of the original Pledge of Allegiance, recognized the divisiveness of religion and consciously chose to leave out references to God. It's about time for humanity to mature and start walking into the future without the psychological crutch of reglion.

The World Newspaper needs to wake up and accept its responsibility when it prints garbage like this. I'm not opposed to freedom of speech, but when you print letters like this that continue to foster hate and bigotry against homosexuals or the non-religious, then you are part of the problem.

I'm sick of the small minded attitudes that use God as a shield to defend their antiquated beliefs & bigotry. A lack of belief in your God isn't the problem, its the so called "religious" that would rather Godsmack others than accept and embrace their differences.

Ashley wrote on Dec 2, 2008 11:52 AM:

I really feel sorry for those who don't have God in their lives. It is sad that they want to bash those that do, which is all the more reason maybe they need God in their lives.

I commit my life to God, I am a sinner, I make mistakes, I am not perfect. All I can do is do my best every day to be a better person and try to live a better life. Some people think that is a sham, well maybe it is in their lives.

When times are bad I feel better by ssimply praying, if you don't have that I guess you just go with the feeling

Boo Baby wrote on Dec 2, 2008 10:41 AM:

It's time to move forward and stop basing your life off of a book of fairytales and a mythical non existant man that was made up to subjagate the masses. This myth of Jesus,Moses the great flood etc etc has been carried on in SEVERAL other random religions (The great flood was based off of a story by the EGYPTIANS) THOUSANDS of years before Christianity even existed. Religion doesn't bring anyone together it FORCES everyone APART.

Who would Jesus bomb?

Education is more powerful than religion wrote on Dec 2, 2008 8:08 AM:

Sky gods don't fix civic problems, educated communities and governments do. Keep God, Allah, Zeus, and Thor all where they belong, safely confined in the pages of antiquated books of fables and lore. Uniting people under banners of false hope and imaginary gods does not solve anything, it just puts the blinders on...as made evident by the romantic spin some people put on the founding years of this country; which in reality were full of bigotry, genocide, slavery and lawlessness. If you want to return to the middle (dark) ages when religion ruled the world's governments and the people were controlled through fear and poverty, then please do, just don't try to take the rest of us with you.

MrButterbur wrote on Dec 2, 2008 5:48 AM:

Uhhh, I think the constitution actually promotes separation of church and state. While I personally have no problem with referencing God on my currency, I draw the line at the narrow-mindedness of religion when faced with fact, not to mention the tendency to persecute others not in agreement with the dogma du jour. The author of the article is correct, in that morals have degraded and this degrades society as a whole. Therfore, if religion will make you a better person, go for it. Realize too, that you can be moral without being religious. People, turn off the televangelists... they only want your money. Turn off Rush, too... he only wants your money, too. These vampires will sell you whatever they think you want to hear and are laughing at you behind your back. Learn to think for yourselves!

Who was Debra, Ester, Sarah and Mary? Man's inhumanity to man has nothing to do with God's plan. Although the Bible uses the term Man it also includes Women of all nationalites. The entire human race came after the flood from Noah's sons. Better brush up on your Bible kid, He didn't promise you a Rose Garden here on earth. Great letter Darrell..

I wish we could go back to those great days.

The word is called progress, and comes from finding a better way to get things done.

Keep in mind, when you rail on social liberties, some gays, and in fact, some women who may have had an abortion sometime in their life may have fought for your right to do so.

Your standard is not my standard. So, in the future, don't quote scripture to me. I saw things happen in Vietnam, Nicaraqua and West Africa that, in your version, could only have happened when God was on a day off.

The USA's government and laws are based mostly on Mesopotamian, Greek and Roman ideas, plus some Pre-Christian European practices, and owe almost nothing at all to Biblical sources.

Can you say Magna Carta wrote on Dec 1, 2008 2:05 PM:

The Constitution of the United States was drafted so as to be in accordance with the Scriptures, to be the legal foundation of a republican form of government based on that model which God had ordained for the children of Israel.
Thomas Jefferson even suggested that the national seal be a portrayal of "the children of Israel in the wilderness, led by a cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night."
Much of the Constitution and our American common law and organic law is also derived from the principles of the Magna Carta, which expressly forbade monarchial tyranny.

Jason wrote on Dec 1, 2008 1:56 PM:

Virtually every one of the 55 writers and signers of the United States Constitution were members of various Christian denominations: 29 were Anglicans, 16 to 18 were Calvinists, 2 were Methodists, 2 were Lutherans, 2 were Roman Catholic, 1 lapsed Quaker and sometimes Anglican, and 1 open deist--Dr. Franklin who attended every kind of Christian worship, called for public prayer, and contributed to all denominations.
George Mason is called the father of the Bill of Rights, for he insisted that the first ten amendments be added to the Constitution. The purpose for such an addition? "The laws of nature are the laws of God, whose authority can be superseded by no power on earth," Mason said.

Thomas wrote on Dec 1, 2008 12:36 PM:

"Our Constitution was based on the Bible."

Can you cite something from our Constitution which reinforces that comment?

Howsoever, it does say that there may not be any religious qualifacations for holding office, nor may Congress legislate regarding religion.

BTW, the commanding general of our Revolutionary War, had no use for the type of belief you claim is America's foundation, yet he and probably much of that Army served honorably to create our Noble Experiment as free from any such religious bigotry.

Victory wrote on Dec 1, 2008 12:12 PM:

I totally agree Darrell. It is a sad thing to see our country agreeing to things like Sharia law (soon to be exposed here and already taking place in Europe)and completely disrespecting our heritage. Our country was founded on God. Not Allah, or Budah, or Darwinism etc. If you live in this country yes you have the right to choose your own beliefs, but it should NEVER be allowed to over proceed our Foundation in "God We Trust". Keep to your own beliefs but DO NOT SILENCE THE BELIEVER WHO BELIEVES AND TRUSTS IN GOD.
