Walgreens local store placement remains in limbo

Is Walgreens going to open a store locally or isn’t it? That’s the question that no one seems to be able to answer.

There’s been talk the pharmacy company might build on the site where Dave’s Pizza is located, at the corner of Newmark Street and Woodland Drive in North Bend. Walgreens officials aren’t confirming it.

A Walgreens representative was looking at different sites, but no decisions have been made yet, according to a few sources, including company officials.

“We’re looking at sites, but there has not been anything confirmed at this point,” Denise Bennett, Walgreens administrative assistant at the corporate office in Deerfield, Ill., said.

David Sherwood, who owns the North Bend pizzeria, along with his wife Theresa Sherwood, said the couple has been in negotiations with a property management company, Village Properties, but he hasn’t heard from anyone lately.

“We’ve been in negotiations with them for a long time,” he said. “We haven’t heard anything for a couple of months, so we really don’t know what to think. It’s up to them now.”

He said he might know more by the end of the year.

Andy Nasburg, a Realtor with North Point Inc. Real Estate & Development in Coos Bay said a colleague has been talking to Walgreens Real Estate Manager Brian Hunter.

Nasburg said Walgreens turned down an area near Newmark Avenue and Laclair Street in Coos Bay a couple of months ago.

“(Hunter) said, if we find two and a half acres on Highway 101 in town they would consider it,” Nasburg said.

But Nasburg said there is no location like that available.

He said they haven’t heard from Hunter in a couple of months now and he’s not sure if they’re working with another real estate company.

At the end of October, Walgreens released a list of strategies that it initiated to increase the company’s revenue growth. That included a plan to slow store growth “to allow more time to develop the company’s management ranks and focus on improving the customer experience, while freeing up capital and enhancing flexibility to invest in Walgreens core business.”

Where oh where has Moonpenny gone? I am guessing that you are out voicing your negative opinions on other issues.
Oh - and my mother is VERY proud of me, as well as my father is. Thank you.

If we don't get some kind of industry other than Walmart, then the last person leaving The area needs to make sure they shut the lights off. Wake up City council members of the bay area!!! Get some other business here besides freaking wal mart and there will be jobs to be had. I also shop in Eugene and Roseburg because of the cheaper prices.

Walgreens is a Pharmacy right? So they would do well at the intersection of Broadway/Woodland and Newmark Ave. I think they should move in next to Kmart. It's still close to the hospital and medical center and all the clinics. That intersection is very busy and doesn't need a bunch of sick folks trying to negotiate in and out. Kmart would benefit from the move and I think other should move there also to create a shopping center there also. If you ask me Home Depot could have done well if they'd have moved there.

I am going to beat the horse again... Is there a leader amoung us who will attempt to bring in businesses that aren't service oriented? 1 time 1 is 1 so let's get some family wage business in here to entice outfits like Home Depot and Walgreens to come to the bay area.

I hear Costco might come to Roseburg. If that's the case all these retailers in the bay area need more industry here to remain viable. It's time to turn down the volume on those who can find negative in everything and get this town back on track!

Don't hold your breath. You know how hard it is to get any business going here.

Voice of Reason wrote on Dec 3, 2008 8:47 PM:

Maybe Walgreen’s will open a store and maybe they won’t. Maybe it’s all Wal-Mart’s and maybe it isn’t. Really, what’s the difference?

What I can’t get over is the fact that everyone’s holding their breath waiting for some big chain store to come in and weep them off their feet when there is so much opportunity for privately owned businesses in our area. Instead of hoping a large store will come in and offer a particular product, people need to take initiative and invest in small businesses that can provide the same goods and/or services. If there truly is a need for the product than someone is definitely missing out, and if there isn’t, than why would we expect a chain to come in anyway?

Also, we as consumers need to support our locally owned businesses. As many have pointed out, the advantages of Wal-Mart only go so far to justify their low prices. As for the small businesses out there: 1) Make sure what you’re offering actually has value for consumers and 2) Invest a little time and money to let people know what you have to offer.

Spectators rarely bring about change.

hey, that's exactly why I do not shop at Walmart. The crowd is just awful. Just goes to show our population is getting dumber by the minute

Kaye wrote on Dec 3, 2008 6:16 PM:

Walmart is a horrible store, the service sucks, the prices they charge at checkout are often wrong and they're by no means much less expensive, than Safeway for groceries and BiMart or Kmart for non-food items.
Just check out the wonderful shrinking packages and you'll find the "good" deals are not so good after all.
The Canned food store has a lot of organic foods lately, so we do have local alternatives!

If you must support ( You think ) walmart and you are so happy they give you a discount on meds then consider for a moment where the discount comes from. They can give away hundreds of thousands of $ in med discounts because they take out Millions. Do you really want your grandkids working in China for walmart. Coos Bay is like Ireland was, always exporting its young as there was no work for them at home. I meet people in Spokane, Seattle, Albany Redding and on that all recognize me from Coos Bay and mention that is where they are FROM. . Sad we have run them out.

Wow wrote on Dec 3, 2008 11:36 AM:

Geez moonpenny, you sound a little bitter. Sounds like another typical Coos county Wal-Mart shopper. That’s why I do not shop there!

moonpenny wrote on Dec 3, 2008 12:29 AM:

Aww, how special you are and your mommy must be so proud that you can afford to go all the way to Eugene and spend your perfect lil crisp dollars there. Ever thought of staying? Walmart serves everyone in this community. Their prescription drug program saves this community thousands of dollars each month and ensures those who need their meds, can get them at a reasonable cost. Mine are over 400.00 a month, with Walmart, I pay 4.00 for one and 152.00 for the other. Go to their pharmacy any time of day the first week of the month and see how many people are able to get their meds without sacrificing groceries or something else for medications. So bright one, you can continue to go to Eugene and shop there, who needs ya.
So perhaps next time you feel compelled to type something here, a "thought" of what you are saying could actually go a long way. You take care Sunshine and have a greeeeaaaat day!

Shopper wrote on Dec 2, 2008 1:18 PM:

So all of you who have commented about my comment -
Well... i save more money by shopping in Eugene so i can afford to do the short distance. I also have a job. I dont smoke or drink - so my money is for bills and household stuff. To say that i put a strain on this economy because i am smart enought to NOT BUY from CHINA (walmart products). Come on now, i know you have to be smarter then that. I am not TELLING anyone how or where to shop - just pointing out the obvious - if you keep spending your LOCAL money so it can be sent to CHINA to build more cheap products - that is your choice. I also shop at Bi-Mart, Fred Meyers and other local stores that are EMPLOYEE OWNED and supported. So... please think before you type.
have a nice day!

Miller wrote on Dec 2, 2008 12:13 PM:

Still hoping that Home Depot or Lowe's builds here. Walgreens would be nice. I shop at them everytime I leave the area. We also need Petco, AutoZone, Michael's, Applebee's or IHOP, Target, Red Robin, Jack-in-the-box, Outback, and any other store that could give us more and better choices. I totally support local businesses but I am also an avid supporter of growth. Yes, I am all for LNG coming here too. We need more industry and more family wage jobs. Obviously, most of the stores I named don't pay much over minimum wage but they do offer jobs to those who wish to work.

Aggressively Looking wrote on Dec 2, 2008 9:59 AM:

Walgreens is aggressively looking at the area. They intend on having representatives in the area in the early spring for 9 months. If they find the right property they will build. The problem is most companies want to locate their business on 101 and if that is not possible then there is less of a chance they will build. They want the visibility from those traveling on the Hwy.

It's people like you shopper that takes our dollars to another area which puts a strain on our local economy. I support our local businesses by shopping locally. If you were an employee at Walmart supporting a family, I think you would have a different opinion!

Need competition wrote on Dec 1, 2008 7:37 PM:

I love both Walgreens and Home Depot. We need them in our community and the competition for Wally world would be good. We should let both companies know we'd like them to come here.

IT WON'T HAPPEN!NOTHING HAPPENS HERE!THE OLD GOATS(PEOPLE) IN THIS COMMUNITY AND CITY POLITICIANS WON'T LET IT HAPPEN.THEY ARE AGAINST JOB GROWTH AND NEW CORPORATIONS MOVING IN HERE.
"BUT THEY ARE THE FIRST TO COMPLAIN WHEN IT COMES TO POT HOLES ON OUR ROADS,HIGH TAXES, OR THE COST OF DENTURES AT THERE LOCAL DENTIST OFFICE, AND ECT.

Walmart had ruined the chance for any other chain stores to come in to this area. Wal mart is overrated and sericve stinks and prices are getting higher and higher. I dont shop there

Home Depot. wrote on Dec 1, 2008 2:16 PM:

Still waiting on the Home Depot. Wal greens will never come

Comment to Shopper wrote on Dec 1, 2008 2:13 PM:

Dear Shopper:
I am glad you have the luxery of going to Eugene to Shop, but not all of us have that ability and therefore, have to support Walmart in order to be able to afford to feed and take care of our families' needs when there is little left at the end of each month after all other bills have to be paid. Even though gas is cheaper, it still is a tank of gas extra that some people can't afford. Please don't ask me to do something, that while I don't totally disagree with you, that some of us just can't do!

shopper wrote on Dec 1, 2008 12:54 PM:

we will never be allowed a VARIETY of store with Walmart here. Walmart has ruined our chances of variety - thats why i spend my money in Eugene - i even go there to Winco for groceries - so much cheaper - even with the cost of gas.
If you want a variety of stores - stop supporting places that keep them away... like Walmart.
