State auditor reviewing Lab Band records

An auditor from the Oregon Department of Justice recently met with Lab Band officials as part of a civil investigation into the group’s financial history.
The state approached the Lab Band leadership earlier this year after board members discovered discrepancies in the group’s bookkeeping. The group’s founder, Greg Young, and his wife, Patricia Young, previously handled the organization’s accounts. He has since resigned as the band director.
The group provided the auditor with information and documents during a visit to the area last week, said state spokesman Pete Shepherd.
He said the auditor hasn’t reached any conclusions or established a timeline to complete the work.
“It’s definitely an active matter at this point,” Shepherd said.
The auditor is from the department’s charitable activities section, he said, which regulates charitable organizations registered in the Oregon.
The North Bend Police Department is conducting its own investigation after receiving complaints about the music group.
Ray Sanford said the Lab Band has an annual budget of between $50,000 and $75,000, with no paid positions. Neither the band’s new musical director, Mike Turner, nor assistant conductor Stacy Tate, will receive pay for their efforts. Sanford said part of the reason Turner and Tate aren’t paid is because the group still has to settle unpaid bills due to its financial difficulties.
“We have not recovered from that yet,” Sanford said.
