Those who are interested in seeing New Riders of the Purple Sage at The Green Spot in Coos Bay on Saturday, Dec. 6, may want to make it a double-gig weekend. Another San Francisco band, Moonalice, also will be appearing that weekend, on Friday, Dec. 5, the day before the New Riders show. Discounted tickets to attend concerts by the two bands cost $30.
Moonalice’s nationwide tour is in support of the band’s debut album, which will be released on Feb. 24, 2009. The band’s music will delight the ears of music lovers who favor the classic warmth of the vinyl LP era, a press release said.
Moonalice is composed of seasoned players who double and triple on a variety of basses, guitars, vocals and more:
• G.E. Smith (bass, guitars, vocals) has previously performed as the leader of the Saturday Night Live house band; lead guitarist with Hall & Oates and Bob Dylan; and was a member of the Flying Other Brothers, who acted as the backing band for Bob Weir and Mickey Hart on at least a dozen occasions.
• Pete Sears (bass, keyboards, accordion, vocals) has played with Rod Stewart, John Lee Hooker, Jefferson Starship, Hot Tuna, various members of the Grateful Dead, and was a member of the Flying Other Brothers.
• Barry Sless (bass, guitar, pedal steel, vocals) is a founding member of the David Nelson Band; has performed with Cowboy Jazz, Kingfish, David Nelson Band, Flying Other Brothers; and still plays with Phil Lesh & Friends.
• Ann McNamee (bass, percussion, vocals) has a doctoral degree in music theory, as well as more than 100 self-penned songs in her portfolio. She is a member of the Flying Other Brothers.
• Roger McNamee (bass, guitar, vocals) is a member of the Flying Other Brothers, while a day gig finds him teaming with U2’s Bono.
• Jimmy Sanchez (bass and drums) is a veteran player who has backed Boz Scaggs, Bonnie Raitt, Dr. John and many others worldwide, and was also a member of the Flying Other Brothers.
• Jack Casady (bass) is a member of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and has played with Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna, as well as with Jimi Hendrix.
