R & R King Logging Inc., a family-owned business in Florence, is a recipient of the 2008 Excellence in Family Business Award.

The award, that was presented by Oregon State University’s Austin Family Business Program at a ceremony on Nov. 20, at the Oregon Zoo in Portland, recognizes the achievements of family businesses in innovation, entrepreneurship, commitment and community involvement. Family businesses are nominated for the award by employees, advisers and owners.

Six Oregon companies and three individuals received the 2008 Excellence in Family Business Award.

“The judges’ selection of our annual winners and finalists in the Austin Family Business Program’s Excellence in Family Business Award is not only a well-deserved honor for the winning family businesses, but an important educational event, as these businesses represent key role models for all fledgling, challenged and hard-working family businesses,” said Robin Klemm, program director.

R & R King is a third-generation family business harvesting timber in the Florence area since the early 1900s. The company has four owners including President Robert King, his wife, Kay, daughter Jennifer Waggoner and her husband, Dan, the company’s vice president.

The company operates six tower-logging operations and one road-building operation with an employee roster of nearly 100 during peak times. With the capacity to process nearly 1,200 tons of timber a day, the company works mainly with repeat customers, including Roseburg Forest Products.

Robert King also is chairman of the board of Oregon Pacific Bank, a bank he and several other key Florence businessmen started in 1979.

“We at Oregon Pacific Bank are proud to congratulate R & R King Logging and the King family as recipients of this prestigious award,” said Jim Clark, president and CEO of Oregon Pacific Bank and an alumni of Oregon State University’s Business School. “Family businesses make up about 90 percent of all businesses in the U.S., and have been the underpinnings of the economy for generations. Mr. King brings his capable leadership skills in owning and operating his business to the Oregon Pacific Bank Board as well. We are fortunate to have him on our team.”
