HILLSBORO — Jordan Poyer ran for five touchdowns and threw for two more and Astoria defeated Central 56-35 Friday in the semifinals of the OSAA Class 4A state football playoffs.
Poyer ran for TDs of 10 and 3 yards and threw a 25-yard scoring pass to Alex Eterno and Astoria took a 21-7 lead after the first quarter, with the Panthers’ lone score coming on a 91-yard kickoff return from JT Tirado.
Poyer then ran for TDs from 20 and 8 yards out and again found Eterno for a 40-yard TD pass to go up 42-7 before Central drew within 42-14 at the half on a 14-yard scoring pass from Grant Hedrick to Michael Hamilton.
Central outscored Astoria 21-14 in the second half, as Hedrick threw TD passes of 10, 50 and 14 yards. A 3-yard TD run from Poyer and a 2-yard scoring scramble from Dane Lund set the final score.
Second-ranked Astoria (13-0) will advance to next weekend’s championship game against Banks, which scored in the final minute to beat Estacada in the other semifinal game late Friday night at Liberty High School.
The title game will be part of a tripleheader at Reser Stadium in Corvallis.
The Fishermen out-gained the Panthers 598 yards to 391, including 345 net passing yards and controlled the ball for 28 minutes, 5 seconds in the game. Astoria was deadly in the red zone, converting six of seven chances.
Poyer rushed for 193 yards on 30 carries. He completed 14 of 17 passes for all 345 of the team’s passing yards.
Eterno caught six passes for 192 yards and two scores for the Fishermen.
Hedrick completed 24 of 32 passes for 318 yards and four touchdowns for top-ranked Central (12-1). Eric Phillips caught seven passes for 132 yards and a score.
Banks 40, Estacada 34
Nick Turner ran 11 yards for a touchdown with 29 seconds left and No. 6 Banks defeated No. 7 Estacada 40-34 Friday in the OSAA Class 4A football semifinals.
Banks (11-2) will play in the title game next weekend against Astoria, which defeated Central 56-35 earlier Friday.
Turner ran for two touchdowns and 160 yards in the game at Liberty High School. Gabe Linehan completed 16 of 19 passes for 241 yards and three touchdowns.
Estacada (10-3) tied it at 26 with 29 seconds in the third quarter on Alex Pursel’s 11-yard touchdown run. But Banks answered quickly on Turner’s 81-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
Estacada came back when Kyle McDonald blocked a punt and returned it to the Banks 1, leading to Pursel’s touchdown run. Pursel also ran for the two-point conversion, giving Estacada a 34-33 lead.
Pursel finished with 216 yards rushing and four touchdowns.
Banks has not played in a state championship game since 1949.
Class 6A
Southridge 44, Beaverton 14
PORTLAND — Kirk Werhane rushed for 165 yards and two touchdowns and Mitch Mathews caught three touchdown passes to lead Southridge to a 44-14 victory over Metro League rival Beaverton in the semifinals of the OSAA Class 6A state football playoffs on Friday.
Southridge advanced to the championship game for the second time in three years. The Skyhawks lost to Jesuit, another league rival, in the 2006 title game.
Southridge will face top-ranked Lake Oswego in the final. The Lakers edged Jesuit 32-28 in the late semifinal.
With Friday’s victory, Southridge avenged a mid-season, 10-7 loss to Beaverton. The Skyhawks looked like a different team this time.
They led 23-7 at halftime, thanks 109 first-half yards by Werhane. He picked up 62 of those yards on an early first-quarter touchdown run that gave Southridge a 7-0 lead.
But Beaverton got that touchdown back three minutes later as Michael DeHaan hit Jake Krichevsky with a 37-yard scoring toss.
After that, Southridge scored 37 unanswered points to put the game away. That included three touchdown receptions by Mathews, who finished the game with five catches for 132 yards. Two of those scores came on leaping grabs in the back of the end zone.
Werhane also had a 42-yard touchdown run during that stretch and Trevor Harman added a 20-yard field goal.
DeHaan, who was 27 of 41 passing for 326 yards, ended Southridge’s scoring run with a late fourth-quarter touchdown pass to Taylor Noyer.
Southridge quarterback Kellen Mastrud attempted only 14 passes but completed 12 of them for 202 yards.
Lake Oswego 32, Jesuit 28
Jack Lomax passed for 323 yards and three touchdowns to lead top-ranked Lake Oswego to a come-from-behind 32-28 victory over No. 2 Jesuit in the semifinals of the OSAA 6A state football playoffs on Friday.
The victory, which was Lake Oswego’s second over Jesuit this season, sends the Lakers to the state title game for third time since 2002. The Lakers will now face Southridge.
Friday’s contest was a fitting battle between the top two teams in the state. The second half featured four lead changes with the last one coming on a 65-yard touchdown reception by Will Storey with 5:19 left in the game.
Storey had to make a difficult, one-handed, behind-the-back grab of Lomax’s throw. The hard-charging fullback then outran two defenders to find his way to the end zone.
That erased a 28-26 Jesuit lead, which came when Anthony Blake completed a long Jesuit drive with a six-yard scoring run late in the third period.
Blake also scored on a three-yard run at the 8:07 mark of the third period, which put the Crusaders ahead 21-20. But Lake Oswego answered a short time later when Lomax hit Micah Hatfield with a 15-yard scoring toss to go ahead 26-21.
After Storey’s late fourth-quarter touchdown, Jesuit still had a chance for one more comeback. The Crusaders advanced to the Lake Oswego 21-yard line, but they wound up losing ground before giving possession back to the Lakers.
Lake Oswego (12-0) had control early after a pair of first-quarter touchdowns. The first came on a 27-yard option pass from Storey to wide receiver Nick Rulli. After a turnover by Jesuit, the Lakers scored again on a one-yard run by Tyson Coleman.
But Jesuit (10-2) bounced right back early in the second period. The Crusaders struck on the first play of the quarter when Keanon Lowe caught a 23-yard touchdown pass from Scott Williams.
Three minutes later, Jesuit tied the game at 14-all when Blake bolted 83 yards through the middle of the Laker line.
The loss spoiled a great game by Blake, who rushed for 234 yards on 28 carries.
