NORTH BEND — Boys and girls, Santa Claus needs to hear from you so he knows what to put under your Christmas tree. So, the man in the jolly red suit, has recruited some help.

With the Tioga Chapter of the Oregon Hunters Association, Santa will operate a hotline available locally at — 756-5161 — on Wednesday. Santa’s helper Ken Bastendorff said his group decided to operate the hotline as a way for children, and their parents, to share what they want for Christmas with Ol’ St. Nick.

The hotline isn’t a new idea for Bastendorff. He said years ago the Bay Area Jaycees sponsored the hotline, but eventually the idea was abandoned.

He felt it was time to resurrect the area’s working relationship with Kris Kringle. Bastendorff said his chapter was looking for a community service project and this seemed liked a good fit.

The hunting chapter won’t be alone in its project. The US Bank branch on Virginia Avenue in North Bend is lending space and telephones to help Santa.

Branch manager Tanya Finch said the branch is behind the idea.

“It’s a neat effort,” she said. “The kids will enjoy calling and talking to Santa.”

Bastendorff has a number of volunteers to serve as the Big Man’s helpers — he thought he would have at least 10.

Working the hotline is enjoyable for the helpers as much as it is for the children who call. For starters, they get to help children connect with Papa Noel. Second, it is a way to learn what the latest toys are, Bastendorff said. Santa’s elves will be treated to cookies and sodas.

The hotline will be open from 6 to 8 p.m.

“We just want the kids to call,” Bastendorff said. “If you call, and the line is busy, call back, because Santa is busy.”
