Community Sports, Fast Breaks for Nov. 22: Matson part of two swimming records
Saturday, November 22, 2008 6:14 AM PST

Local masters swimmer Karen Matson scored again in the U.S. Masters Postal competitions.

Matson was a member of two national record and winning relays from Oregon in the USMS Postal 5K Swim last summer.

Covering more than 3 miles herself in the water in a 50-meter pool, Matson combined with female swimmers from Portland and Redmond to win the 45-and-over women’s 3x5,000-meter relay, breaking the former national record by 13 seconds.

Matson also triumphed with two men and another woman in the 4x5,000 mixed 45-and-over relay. They broke the old record by 14 seconds.

Matson placed fourth individually in the 45-49 age group with a time of 1 hour, 13 minutes and 43.07 seconds.

Matson is part of the strong masters swimming contingent in the Coos Bay area, centered at Mingus Park Pool. Matson was timed last weekend in the Postal 3,000-yard swim this month and she also is preparing for the Postal hour swim in January.

The local masters group will hold a workout from 7 to 9 a.m. on Thanksgiving day and also from 7 to 9 a.m. on New Year’s day.

Thanksgiving run

Anyone looking for some exercise before the big meal on Thanksgiving Day is invited to participate in the South Coast Running Club’s annual Turkey Trot, a non-competitive run or walk on the Empire Lakes paved trails at John Topits Park in Coos Bay.

The start will be at 9 a.m. Participants can choose their own distance from among several routes using the paved trails.

The entry fee is two or more canned food items, which will be donated to a local food bank. Hot cider will be available at the finish.

Wrestlers place

Four wrestlers from the South Coast Grapplers club won individual titles in the Glide tournament last weekend.

Cole Smith, Tyler Campbell, Thaddeus Nelson and Robert Cotlet Jr. all won their weight classes in the tournament.

In addition, Cade Hite, Bryce Campbell, J.J. Hubbard, Wyatt McCarthy and Kermit Gaston placed second and Mathew Golder was fourth.

Every wrestler from the club who went to the tournament placed.

“Overall, the kids did a good job, even though they are a little rusty,” said coach Derek Hite.  “We had Kermit (Gaston) win his first match ever. The coaches are real proud of him.”

Next week, the South Coast Grapplers will compete in the Best of the West Tournament at the Jackson County Fairgrounds near Medford.

Billiards

The Tioga BCA League has started its winter pool season with a record nine different teams, including one from Reedsport and another from Coquille.

The standings will be included in the Community Scoreboard each weekend when they are available.
