McMinnville displays artificial tree

MCMINNVILLE (AP) — Oregon provides most of the nation’s Christmas trees, but one Willamette Valley city decided to make its community tree a fake.
After several years of delivering a tree in spectacular fashion, often by helicopter, McMinnville’s Christmas Lighting Committee decided it would be better to buy artificial.
City Manager Kent Taylor said finding an attractive tree of sufficient size for an outdoor display was becoming a problem. An even bigger problem was the cost and logistics of getting a big tree delivered to the city park.
The cost of the artificial tree and lights was $10,000. The tab will be split by the city, McMinnville Downtown Association and McMinnville Area Chamber of Commerce.
Taylor says the new tree could easily last more than a decade. |
