OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — The Olympia City Council took the first step toward adding a $20 car tab fee to vehicle license renewals.

The council voted Tuesday to have city staff draft an ordinance to create a Transportation Benefit District. The Olympian reports council members will vote Dec. 9 on the district.

A state law allows cities to add $20 to the car tab fee without a public vote. The fee would raise $634,000 a year in Olympia for transportation projects.

The majority of people who spoke at Tuesday’s meeting approved the fee. Tim Eyman, who led state initiative campaigns to lower car tab fees, told the council it should spend existing revenues more effectively.
