Students at Millicoma Intermediate School have collected more than 1,000 pounds of food as part of the school’s annual food drive competition.

Tubes of peanut butter, cans of soup and boxes of stuffing piled up over the course of last week. Students and members of the Millicoma Booster Club spent part of Saturday divvying the donated goods into 18 parcels, one for each classroom.

Principal Bryan Trendell said each classroom held a random drawing for families to take home a box of food.

“They went to families that could use it this holiday season,” Trendell said.

The booster club also gave each winning family a $25 gift certificate to buy a turkey for Thanksgiving.

The fifth-graders narrowly edged the sixth grade, Trendell said, winning an extra recess period. Mrs. Ashcraft’s sixth-grade class led the older kids, while Mrs. Farr’s fifth graders brought in the most donations in the school.

“It’s something we do every year,” Trendell said. “It went really well.”

We really can learn so much from our children!

I am grateful that the children and staff at Millicoma are modeling for all of us the need to "share the wealth" with others during a time of economic uncertainty.

I find it interesting that so many people are quick to complain, judge, criticize and gossip about much of what is printed in The World and on this site and yet have nothing to offer when something like this story is published.

It takes children to raise a village!
