Hike promises to burn off holiday calories

Wednesday, November 26, 2008 |
The South Coast Striders hiking group is inviting people to burn off a little turkey and gravy with a hike in Coos Bay on Saturday, Nov. 29.
The hike will start at 10 a.m. at John Topits Park off Hull Street at Empire Lakes. There will be a short 1.5-mile hike at a leisurely pace along the paved trails around Empire Lakes. It will last about two hours and include some information about local history, plants and wildlife. There will be a longer hike of 3.5 miles at a brisker pace around both lakes and through the Southwestern Oregon Community College Campus. That hike will last two hours as well, ending just in time for a picnic of Thanksgiving leftovers at the park.
The group encourages families to attend and suggests grandparents and grandchildren can take the shorter hike if they wish, or send their kids or grandkids on the longer hike.
For more information, call Don Luce at 266-8201 or the Bay Area Hospital at 269-8077, or e-mail to
southcoaststriders@gmail.com. The group also has a Web site
http://www.coostrails.com, which includes schedules and directions to trailheads.
