Gold Beach QB can play in championship game

Gold Beach quarterback Jeffrey Knox will be able to play in this week’s Class 3A championship football game.
Knox was ejected from Saturday’s semifinal game, a penalty that normally comes with a suspension in the following game.
Gold Beach appealed the suspension, and the appeal was granted Monday by the commissioner of the Lane County Football Officials Association, said Brad Garrett, assistant executive director for the Oregon School Activities Association. Lane County provided the officials for the semifinal game Saturday.
Gold Beach still will receive a fine from OSAA for Knox’s ejection, Garrett said. The fine for a first ejection for any player at a school is $50 and it increases by $50 for each subsequent ejection.
Gold Beach coach and athletic director Kevin Swift declined to discuss specifics of the appeal, at the request of Central Curry School District Superintendent Jeff Davis, Swift said.
“We followed OSAA procedures,” Swift said, adding that he received word that the appeal had been granted shortly before noon. “That’s all we want to say.”
Knox was the offensive player of the year in the Sunset Conference and also is one of the Panthers’ top defensive backs.
He was ejected after having two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties during Gold Beach’s win over Regis — one for spiking a ball after a touchdown run and another for comments he made to a Regis player following a Gold Beach interception.
Under OSAA guidelines, an ejection from one game normally means a suspension from the next contest, though a school can appeal through the association that provided the officials for the game.
“Gold Beach has worked through their process with the local association commissioner and convinced him to waive the suspension period,” Garrett said.
Essentially, Swift was able to convince the Lane County Football Officials Association that the situation did not merit suspension, Garrett said.
Swift would not discuss the basis of his appeal.
He also said Knox will be disciplined this week for his actions.
“I don’t want (anyone) to think Jeffrey is punishment free,” Swift said, adding he will handle the discipline within the team.
Knox is a central player for the Panthers both on offense and defense, and the championship game would have been considerably tougher if he could not play Saturday.
“We are extremely happy that this young man will be able to play (in the championship game) his senior year,” Swift said. “We are not dismissing the fact that Jeffrey did something wrong.”
Gold Beach faces Grant Union for the Class 3A title at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Hillsboro Stadium. Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for students.
