The U.S. Post Office in Coos Bay has quite a cleanup on its hands after a 1999 Mercury Sable crashed through the front window and door of the lobby Monday.

Police started getting calls about a car that smashed into the post office, on Golden Avenue, at about 1:45 p.m.

No injuries were reported to either the driver of the Mercury, Alvin Ferry, 84, of Gold Beach or his passenger, Grace Ferry, 83, of Gold Beach or to people in the post office at the time of the accident.

No citations were issued or criminal charges filed in the accident police said. The investigation is continuing.

I'm disgusted that they're not citing him. Nothing against this man, but if had been anyone younger, teen or adult, you know they would have been cited.

OVERTON, Texas (AP) — An elderly driver hurtled through barricades into a crowd lined up for a Christmas parade Monday and injured several people, some of them members of a Cub Scout troop, a city official and witnesses said.

Almost a common occurrence as America grays.

Why isn't he being sited? If this was a young person they would be fined and cited you can guarantee that.

I SAY MAKE MR.FERRY PAY FOR THE DAMAGE HE CAUSED TO THE POST OFFICE. HE SHOULD HAVE RODE THE CURRY COUNTY PUBLIC TRANSIT BUS. TALK ABOUT PLAYING FAVORITISM TO A WHITE ELDERLY MALE, IF IT HAD BEEN SOMEONE ELSE THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN ISSUED A CITATION. TURN IN YOUR DRIVERS LICENSE MR.FERRY AND GET OFF OF THE STREETS BEFORE YOU KILL SOMEONE!!!!!!!

Is this being dealt with any where in the United States? There are so many bad drivers out there. Some days I feel like I should have just stayed in the office or at home. Every day I have a close call. People running lights, stop signs, not using turn indicators, making a second lane where there is only one so they can make a right hand turn, speeding, going too slow, not making wide enough turns, and so on. I think everyone should read the driver's hand book and then ask themselves if they are driving as they should in Oregon.

It's one thing to eat some curb, but to keep on going right into the side of the building? He has no more business driving than that young boy that ran into his neighbor's house recently.

A driver's license is a PRIVILEGE, and should be re-certified regularly for ALL people, young AND old. If I have to renew my CPR certification (to SAVE lives), should drivers (who can TAKE lives) have to do the same?

I wish someone would hurry up and make it a law already before more people get killed or have their property damaged. It's not even safe INDOORS now so thank God I live and work above ground level... WTF?!

shameful wrote on Nov 26, 2008 8:29 AM:

It was so sad how the emergency responders didn't move this man to safety (ie a place to sit down, out of the way). He was just standing there leaning on his car with his cane while the tow truck was hooking up to his car and kcby was videotaping.

I have to agree with PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION. Driving isn't a right its a privilege and all of us are getting older and our reflexes are getting slower and when that happens I would think that you would not want to be behind the wheel of a 2000lb. missile. Would we all be as calm if this had happened in a school zone when the kids were present? Surrender your license...its time.

Glad this guy has friends wrote on Nov 25, 2008 12:06 PM:

It sounds like he has a supportive group of friends, that is great, you should be driving him and his wife I think.

To bozo below wrote on Nov 25, 2008 12:05 PM:

He is 84, and I didn't say he shouldn't drive because he has a cane. He has obviously a combination of issues. It is not common to mash the gas pedal so hard as to fly into a building without having the motor reflexes to stop in time. There are young people that shouldn't drive also, and they run into things but at 84 most people are at an age they don't have the motor skills that driving requires. What if he had killed someone?

HUA wrote on Nov 25, 2008 12:05 PM:

To "Time for public transportation": At leats Mr. Ferry does not drive with his head up his #%* like you.
I, too, am grateful that no one was hurt.

to time for public transportation wrote on Nov 25, 2008 12:02 PM:

because he walks with a cane means he shouldnt be driving? PUHLEEESE... i have friends that have no legs, are in a wheelchair, and they drive, get real.. and age is only a number, so what about the 22 year old and 16 year old that collided today, does that mean they are too young to drive? get a hold of yourself. maybe u shouldnt be driving either.

odotter wrote on Nov 25, 2008 11:58 AM:

TFPT....You're arrogant beyond belief.

I know a 92-year-old and a 93-year-old both of whom are excellent drivers.

Age isn't the issue, you're a greater danger on the road with your smurky arrogance.

Time for public transportation wrote on Nov 25, 2008 11:41 AM:

At 84 he has absolutely no business being behind the wheel of a car. He walks with a cane which means he already has issues to deal with. I am sorry but it is time for public transporation or family carpool. When are people going to realize that driving is a not a right! He could have just as easily killed someone.
