Emergency responders took a California man to a hospital Sunday after an all-terrain vehicle accident in the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area.

According to Sgt. Dave Marshall of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, a 2004 Arctic Cat crashed into a small sheer bank at about 1 p.m., after coming off a banked trail too fast near the second staging area in Winchester Bay. The ATV rider, Paul Harter of West Sacramento, Calif., broke one of his legs or dislocated it at the knee, Marshall said.

Medics took Harter to Lower Umpqua Hospital and then to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Eugene. A hospital spokeswoman said he remained in serious condition this morning.
