Fall from car sends CB teen to hospital

Monday, November 24, 2008 |
A teenage boy was flown to Eugene Sunday after he fell off the back of a moving car.
At about 2:45 p.m., Coos Bay Police officers went to the 1400 block of Anderson Avenue in Coos Bay, following a report of the accident. When they arrived, they found 17-year-old Derek Medina of Coos Bay on the ground with an apparent head injury. The teen was taken by Bay Cities Ambulance to Bay Area Hospital, where he was later flown to a Eugene hospital.
Medina was listed in serious condition this morning at Sacred Heart Medical Center.
The investigation revealed that a 1994 Buick Century, driven by 18-year-old Joseph Frost of Coos Bay, was eastbound on Anderson Avenue, when Medina jumped on the back of the car. He then fell off and hit his head on the pavement.
Frost and Medina are friends, a Coos Bay Police Department press release said. They were coming from a residence on Anderson Avenue where they had gathered with other friends for lunch. Alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the accident.
The investigation is continuing, and the case will submitted to the Coos County District Attorney’s Office for further review.
