North Bend’s football season came crashing to a halt Friday night when Astoria’s prolific offense ran through the visiting Bulldogs on the way to a 46-7 victory in the Class 4A quarterfinals.

The No. 2 Fishermen moved on to a semifinal matchup with top-ranked Central next weekend. North Bend was eliminated from the quarterfinals for the third straight season.

Standout Astoria quarterback Jordan Poyer rushed for 148 yards and scored four touchdowns in the game and Dane Lund added two more scores and 134 yards. The Fishermen scored the first 46 points.

North Bend avoided a shutout when Jake Lucero scored on a 2-yard run in the final minute and Kyle Rose tacked on the extra point kick.

While Astoria moved the ball nearly at will for the first three quarters, the Bulldogs couldn’t get anything going.

“We had a real hard time,”said NorthBend coach Rick Taylor, adding that the Bulldogs struggled with the muddy conditions and Astoria’s team speed.

“We couldn’t run any of our lateral stuff at all,”Taylor said. “We couldn’t cut.”

North Bend had only 1 yard of offense in the first quarter, and the Bulldogs’ first big play in the second, a 21-yard gain by Lucero, ended in a fumble recovered by Astoria.

North Bend trailed 14-0 at that point — on scoring runs of 6 and 1 yards by Poyer — and Max Johnson added a 27-yard field goal to make it 17-0. Lund scored his first touchdown on a 17-yard scamper in the final minute of the half to give Astoria a 24-0 edge at the break.

Poyer added scores on Astoria’s first two possessions of the second half, and the Fishermen led 38-0 after three quarters.

Astoria also was aided by generous bounces, recovering its first four fumbles before North Bend finally got one midway through the fourth.

By that time, Astoria led 46-0. Even when the Fishermen botched the snap after their final touchdown by Lund, holder Ian Erickson was able to scramble for a two-point conversion.

In addition to his rushing yards, Poyer passed for 60 yards.

“He’s the best player we saw this year by a long shot,” said NorthBend assistant Mike Forrester, adding that Poyer also stood out on defense. “It’s pretty impressive how he closes on people defensively.”

Lucero led the Bulldogs with 64 yards rushing on eight carries.

Backup quarterback Tyler Goode went 4-for-5 passing in the fourth quarter for 83 yards. Starter Dalton Iveans went 2-for-3 for 11 yards.

Skyler Walton had three catches for 48 yards and Bryce Weidman added two for 41.

Despite the loss, Taylor considered his first season at NorthBend a big success.

“It was a tremendous year for the kids,”Taylor said. “It was wonderful being able to coach them.

“You feel badly it ends on a game like that. You hope it doesn’t negate in peoples’ minds the accomplishments they did make.”

Taylor expects the Fishermen to put up a good battle against Central next week. The other Class 4Asemifinal features Banks against Estacada.

In Class 5A, Midwestern League champion Thurston will face Glencoe after beating Sherwood, while Jefferson, which eliminated Marshfield last week, will battle top-ranked West Albany after knocking off Mountain View on Friday.
