LNG facility will deter investment

Why must we have a liquefied natural gas facility shoved on us?

LNG is not a self-sustaining, renewable resource within our shores, but must be shipped across the Pacific from third-world countries and in competition with other buyers.

Presently, we have a near-to pristine bay. The air is clean; not so if a LNG plant is sited here. Each year tons of particulate matter would be released into our now clean air. Many people would want to move away. Many others would not want to move here. Why would they with the noise reverberating across the bay, the polluted air, the potential danger risk? Our whole port identity would be lost to LNG. Coos Bay would be known as an LNG port.

LNG tankers are huge, three football fields in length and 13 stories high, with rumor they will soon be made larger. By their nature these tankers impose restrictions for other boat traffic. Our port is narrow. Other vessels would be forced to come and go according to LNG tanker restraints.

Yes, of course, we need jobs, but only 50 to 60 jobs would be offered by this facility, not a fair exchange for what would be lost having an LNG facility sited here. As for other industries coattailing on an LNG facility, few would want to sit next to an LNG plant or in an LNG port.

As for the 36-inch LNG pipeline that would traverse our state through peoples’ lands, forests and many streams, it’s an insult to the people, their land and to the integrity of Oregon.

If we must have an energy facility here, then why not a solar power plant? This would create not a few but hundreds of jobs and help Oregon become a leader in self-sustaining green energy. This is one plausible answer that would solve our job situation and yet keep our identity — that of a scenic bay and a clean air coast.

Everyman,

The issue is this LNG SCAM at Jordan Cove, not California (Nice try in changing the subject "again") & how the ONLY reason it's here is because California has rejected every time there!

Correct everyman, I have a problem with this area having to take all the risk, pollute the air, become more dependent on foreign countries for energy needs (Failed practice in the 1970's with OPEC), 400 Oregon citizens losing 80 foot section of their land & the list goes on & on, just so California can get some gas! Actually everyman, California is pretty smart having someone else to take all risk & the rest of the MANY negatives this LNG SCAM offers & use them to get some expensive gas that they can afford I guess!

Oh, Jane, your ability to make no sense never ceases to amaze me...

You can't have it both ways Jane...EITHER;

1 - We try to be like California on this or

2 - we don't

You have stated over and over how much you are no fan of that state or anything from it, yet you want us to imitate them in regards to this issue (when it suits your purposes, mind you).

If they are so bad, why should we try to be like them? If they are not, why shouldn't we send them LNG????

And please don't respond with non-answers saying how little facts I have, or how much of a "shill" I am...please just answer the question.

Creed,

LNG has been rejected by California every time it's been tried to come in! Only reason this LNG SCAM is here at Jordan Cove is because it's been rejected in California, because all the gas is going to Northern California from Jordan Cove! Do your homework before making foolish statements in here!

P.S. You should talk San Francisco into accepting Bob Braddock & his LNG SCAM there, if it's so GREAT!!!

Has anyone taken note of the ugly chipping plant on our bay - right next to the ugly fuel depot? Has anyone taken note of the rotting docks? How about the shuttered businesses and those in the process of going out of business? I just drove the Oregon coast this past weekend and I've got news for Kay and others: this town is ugly, it's dying and it's an eyesore to the Oregon coast. P.S. No one in San Francisco complains about the tankers in the bay.

I agree you Kay & Registered Republican, almost all negative reasons to NOT support this Lng SCAM for a few jobs the locals won't get due to job requirements & a few extra tax dollars that will only be dumped into the other SCAM projects going no where fast as the rail line, New Airport, etc!

I want it here...for what its worth

I am a registered republican and dont want this lng here or in the usa wrote on Nov 25, 2008 10:23 AM:

A good & wise letter, because Lng is OLD way of thinking people, anytime you increase your dependence on foreign countries for anything especially energy needs, you are worse off (Anyone remember the 1970's oil embargo where OPEC stopped selling to the USA & oil/gas prices tripled in a very short period of time???)! A no brainer on this being bad for Oregon & the USA, very little to gain (A few extra tax dollars, that'll just be dumped into Oregon's welfare system, rail line or New Aiport SCAM programs going to nowhere fast), but alot to lose (Higher natural gas prices, due to Lng being more expensive, Oregon land lost, especially to the 400 directly affected citizens, air polluter & safety issues that will NEVER get better)! This Republican says NO this useless Lng idea & SCAM is a good word to describe it also!

change isnt good for everyone wrote on Nov 23, 2008 10:43 PM:

the insult to the people of oregon are the people who want to make everything pristine and have no growth in the industrial sector, however they will gladly purchase items that are produced from countrys who grossly pollute the air and say nothing, solar and wind power only work under certain conditions.our good old government have taxed and put so many fee's on industries that they have relocated to other countrys so they can be compeitive and stay operating .i came to oregon 20+yrs ago just to get away from the fruits and nuts but somehow they did stumble across the state line and where ever they ended up at they brought their baggage with them, and turned a dream into a nightmare for others. and wonder why they are disliked..

Fred wrote on Nov 22, 2008 12:15 PM:

Kay, do you realize your "pristine" bay was and is a working bay? Go away and live out your little pristine fantasy somewhere else. GET OUT and let us WORK!!!!

Finally a woman of vision.Yes we need alternative energy sources and I agree with Kay Why cant we attract solar panel companies or tecnology companies. Not something that has potential disaster written all over it.
