LNG could chase away pensioners

Supporters of liquefied natural gas should look at the big picture. Because they have narrow vision, if they think the handful of real jobs are going to save the area’s economy.

The only thing keeping the Bay Area alive now is the people on pensions and their money. Pensioners can have their checks sent any where in the world. They do not choose to live here — because LNG is here.

If pensioners were to pack up and find a new paradise, this area would see how depressed it really is. There would not be a need for all of the doctors, real estate, insurance, service people, shoe stores, coffee shops, hot dog stands, or even the executive director of the South Coast Development Council Inc. Also, there would not be a housing shortage.

The area’s elected and appointed officials should be proud of themselves for sitting on their hands and giving LNG a green light.

Are we so desperate that we should accept LNG at any cost?

If LNG does come here, one thing it could create is a new tourist attraction on the Oregon Coast. We might have the newest real ghost town.

Everyman,

So you think 39 full time jobs created by this LNG SCAM that will be filled by outsiders (No locals will qualify for due to education/experience requirements) vs Over 700K tourists & MILLIONS of baby boomer retirements that will decide to visit/live somewhere else is a GREAT economic tradeoff? Either you are going to profit from this California LNG SCAM or just plain ignorant/uneducated on this subject! No brainer on this California LNG SCAM, just say NO to foreign investors getting richer & Oregon takes all the safety risks along with getting an air polluter, just so California can get some gas....such a DEAL....NOT!

So when has our local economy been stronger;
1 - when the logging industry was in it's heyday, and there were almost no retirees?

or

2 - When the retirement "industry" became the only growing entity on the South Coast, and there were no longer many loggers?

I'm telling you, we will only be able to serve lattes and take care of retirees for a few more years before this area dries up and blows away.

Great article, but you left out tourists would come here less & that isn't a small number at OVER 700K visiting a year to see our beautiful coast & Crater Lake to name the BIGGEST attractions!

this comment has as much fact to it as the republicans are going to take your social security away from you......

No, no, and NO! Without living wage jobs and tax bases from industry, retirees will only turn a community into a trailer park with no services. And what makes you think this would be a retiree destination, anyway? Another Newport? Yeah right. Another Monterrey? Laughable. Pull your heads out and start building industry in this area NOW.
