WASILLA, Alaska (AP) — Gov. Sarah Palin has granted the traditional Thanksgiving pardon to one lucky turkey, but the video that shocked some viewers captured what was happening in the background.

As she answered questions Thursday at Triple D Farm & Hatchery outside Wasilla, cameras from the Anchorage Daily News and others showed the bloody work of an employee slaughtering birds behind the former Republican vice presidential candidate.

On the video, Palin didn’t comment about the slaughter as she answered questions, saying she’s thankful that her son’s Stryker brigade is relatively safe in Iraq and the rest of her family is healthy and happy. She said she’s glad to be back in Alaska.

“This was neat,” she said of the outing. “I was happy to get to be invited to participate in this. For one, you need a little bit of levity in this job, especially with so much that has gone on in the last couple of months that has been so political obviously that it’s nice to get out and do something to promote a local business and to just participate in something that isn’t so heavy-handed politics that it invites criticism. Certainly we’ll probably invite criticism for even doing this, too, but at least this was fun.”

"I'm the mayor, I can do whatever I want until the courts tell me I can't.'" --Sarah Palin, as quoted by former City Council Member Nick Carney, after he raised objections about the $50,000 she spent renovating the mayor's office without approval of the city council
Just like bush!

People in the middle east hate us because we won't leave them alone! WE cause wars, not them. Eisenhower, a republican said, "In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military industrial complex."
We just witnessed that acquisition. Now we're broke! Get it?

That republicans except such mediocrity? We have a mutt with an IQ below 90 in the white house and a mob that drooled over another with like wise intelligence. We've had enough abuse from leaders that only qualify for minimum wage labor. If you would demand more, we would get it.

All turkeys should be at the PETA parade along with the minks, sea lions, seals, dolphins, tigers, elephants, otters, greyhounds, and spotted owls.
Even if those birds in the back ground were kept alive, they could not survive in the wild they were produced to be poultry!!

I don't think the concern here was that this clip would offend vegetarians. I think what people are finding funny and ironic is that this was happening. Not too many feet behind her, and she was completely oblivious to the situation. This would be funny with any politician, and I think people just have to enjoy the fact that it is amusing. It doesn't mean she is a good or bad person. It just means she was in a situation she was unaware of. And it is ironic because any president of the United States would want to be aware of such a PR snafu. I'm getting so tired of everybody and their ruffled feathers... think about how you would talk to us if we were in each other's living rooms face-to-face having this conversation- around our children, grandchildren, friends or family. If we all thought the same the world would be a very boring place.

Sarah Palin provides the perfect public face for an myopically arrogant ignorance which is far too common ........ and frighteningly so amongst those millions who believed that she and McCain were suitable choices for America's President.

Still, let us hope that she will continue to fill that much needed void for a very long time.

MrButterbur wrote on Nov 28, 2008 4:00 PM:

Sorry, Mrs. Palin would not make a great president. She will NEVER make a great president because it is clear that she only sees only one side of many issues. In this regard, she does, however, make for great comic relief. Hah Hah Hah. Turkey.

Prasanth, turkeys are killed every day. On any given day besides thanksgiving you can buy a turkey at the store, or ground turkey, or turkey sausage, or fried turkey legs or whatever.

prashanth wrote on Nov 24, 2008 5:32 PM:

Mrs Palin is a hidden romantic who loves her husband to death and her children even more. She will make a great president in future. The question is is killing animals like turkeys for food any different than killing soldiers of an enemy state? What makes all those animal lovers think that animals are more important than human beings? And if you are a vegetarian what gives you the right to impose your values on meat eaters? True the number of animals in the world are getting less but that is because the number of human beings are increasing rapidly. Know what this does? It decreases the value of a person and killing people becomes far less of a problem.
Being a vegetarian does not make you a saint. Hitler was a vegetarian. I personally do not take meat on certain days but I am doing it voluntarily. But I do relish my meat, thank you very much. Maybe if Buddhism spread in the good old USA then there will be more compassion towards animals. Plus thanksgiving comes round once a year. I do not think turkeys are killed everyday.
