Too few passengers book flights to Portland

NORTH BEND - Airport officials are happily surprised with passenger counts on flights between North Bend and San Francisco. But they are equally surprised and disappointed with afternoon flights to Portland.

For the month of October, flights between Southwest Oregon Regional Airport and San Francisco totaled 1,239 filled seats, or a 74 percent load factor, according to a memo from airport Operations Manager Gene Cossey to Executive Director Gary LeTellier.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if another flight or two is added by summer,” LeTellier said.

Portland flights, however, had just 559 seats filled — a load factor of 51.1 percent.

LeTellier said the problem is most likely an issue with scheduling that he needs to discuss with SkyWest Airlines. The airline began offering service between North Bend and Portland on Oct. 12, with two round trips a day leaving North Bend at 6 a.m. and 2 p.m. The afternoon time doesn’t really suit business travelers, LeTellier said.

What makes the San Francisco flights so popular is the international connections offered down south, he said. Nothing like that is available when the SkyWest afternoon flight arrives in Portland.

“There’s nothing to connect to,” he said.

Coos County Airport District Commissioner Helen Brunell Mineau agreed.

“The only thing really to connect to is at midnight,” she said. “People are asking for a 10 or 11 p.m. flight.”

The airport district had to raise $250,000 for a revenue agreement for SkyWest on its San Francisco flights, and $713,000 to guarantee the airline would break even on its northbound flights. LeTellier said he’s pretty sure officials won’t have to dip into the $250,000. But he is concerned about reaching 64 percent on the Portland flights — SkyWest’s break-even level. The district is increasing marketing efforts to improve the numbers.

“December, January and February will be the litmus test for us,” LeTellier said in a report.

Our complaint on the Californians moving here is that they leave because they don't like it there. They come here get elected to City Councils and other groups to change it to the same thing they left California for. We want a shooting range so look at the crowd that is sniveling and opposing it. CALIFORNIANS.......

I agree with 'Common Sense, RB and CB Resident". It seems they are trying hard to impress someone, certainly not me. They have a bottomless source of money to draw from. Have they already or when are they going to decide on the expensive art work to hang and impress others? I don't plan on flying at least not out of North Bend or should that be Coos Bay.

Just do what I do. Work for an airline. And no I don't work skywest or united. I work for the only airline still making a profit. Lol. I too fly down to coos bay all the time to visit family and friends. Im just glad I don't have to pay for those over priced fares between pdx and oth. Thank u southwest airlines for all the free flights u give us employees

Again! My flight was canceled AGAIN! Second Sunday in a row the 6am flight was canceled. I have no choice but to use this airport and United but gee, how many flight can they cancel. Not to mention all the re-routing I have to do. To catch my connecting flights I have to leave on a Thursday or Sunday. I am going to try again this Thursday, hopefully it is not canceled again. And with no compensation what so ever!

SkyWest (otherwise known as Scarewest)
charges way too much money to fly in or out of NB/CB. We tried to round trip from Nevada, leaving from SLC. Cost was prohibitive and we'd still be 250 mi from home. They fly right into our town but that added $300.00 to the bill. The only way to reduce prices is more people flying but that's the Catch 22.
We really like NB/CB and will continue to come to the coast but if I didn't have to spend a day road trippin I would spend more money LOCALLY. That would be two extra breakfasts at the Pancake Mill, not to mention Motel, etc.

Another find example of this unneeded waste of tax payer's $$$ the "NEW" airport (What was wrong with the "OLD" remodeled airport anyways???) & not having another major airline company to offer better rates & service! One top of all this, these Coos County Airport District Commissioner clowns are putting in 230K parking machines (Chargine $6 a day parking) that will not be used as planned, because locals will be dropped off at the front door along with tourist & golfers!

I miss Horizon too! I have not bothered to fly since they left. If I need to fly I will take my business out of town instead of paying for the over priced flight now offered by SkyWest. If businesses want the local folk to spend their dollars locally they need to price their product or service to suit the local economy. Duh!

The flights to portland cost too much!! When we had Horizon it always was a little more than Eugene but not twice as much.

I have stopped using the North Bend Airport. The new flights cost too much to get me to Portland. And now, with an additional cost of parking? Someone with too much money and not enough brains can have my seat on the flights to Portland.
I miss the Horizon Flights to Portland.

You all talk as if California people shouldnt be allowed to move to oregon. Aww all the poor little oregon people are being picked on. Wah wah Wah.

I have heard thru the grapevine that Oceanair Aviation is working to set up charter flights to Portland soon. This is just another example of local buisnesses filling the need for local problems..Think locally, spend locally. Money spent in our community helps our community.

Chris wrote on Nov 23, 2008 12:52 PM:

OK ... people ... quit complaining about Californians and the fact that you hate the airport. I am proud to say that I will use this service. Yes, I agree the economy is bad and I agree with driving to Portland because of costs. I would do the same if I were going a short distance. But for those of us "locals" that need to go farther than Portland I will proudly use this service and thank the Airport Commissioners for all of their hard work. Sometimes I am just ashamed to say that I am associated with some of the small minded people of this community!

Scribbler wrote on Nov 22, 2008 8:50 PM:

I flew a few weeks ago... after I drove up to Portland. I didn't fly from North Bend because the flight to PDX from OTH was more expensive than my flight to Minneapolis from Portland.

No way, no how.

s graham wrote on Nov 22, 2008 8:03 PM:

its the stupid scheduling!!! we loved horizon and their flights to portland as we fly from portland to ontario ca at least once a month now we have to drive to eugene to make our connections and that totally sucks!! we live in reedsport and the drive to eugene it too long but I guess until skywest or until horizon comes back we will have to boycott north bend airport

Paul wrote on Nov 22, 2008 6:38 PM:

Why would anyone complain about Californians moving to Oregon. All we do is create jobs and spend lots of money which keeps the economy going. Who wants to pay the high price to fly to Portland and be in either the rain or snow, when you can fly south and stay dry. I love Oregon but the rain does get to you at times and its nice to go south for a few months.

karen wrote on Nov 22, 2008 5:05 PM:

Like I said before...doing business with United Airlines in any form is not a good deal for anyone BUT United. I enjoyed Horizon as I could fly from North Bend to the Midwest and the South and pay a fare that was decent..Not now
I quit flying United after a flight from Denver to Cedar Rapids landed in Des Moines with the emergency crews out and all of us on board in crash positions. This was the 2nd time for me and that was ENOUGH.

DeeBee wrote on Nov 22, 2008 4:46 PM:

SkyWest books people to fly south to connections rather than N to Portland for connections. We used to go to Portland and then fly east - this last time we had to go south and fly east - I'll just wager that 1/2 - 2/3 - if not more of the southbound travelers would have been northbound if we still had Horizon. The economy isn't good enough to double the passenger load to have full flights both north and south. Do the math!!

local wrote on Nov 22, 2008 12:59 PM:

I use to fly out of North Bend on Horizon once a week to Portland. I still fly to Porland once a week. However I now fly out of Eugene because of the cost at North Bend.Go sit at the airport and hear and see all the Calif.people.Get use to it.It is only going to get worse.

New Coos Bay Resident. wrote on Nov 22, 2008 11:23 AM:

It doesn't help that they cancel their flights to PDX and don't notify the passengers until we get there. I received a automate call informing me that my flight was canceled at 7 am when my flight was scheduled to leave at 6 am. I also missed my connecting flight to Hawaii and missed a very important meeting. Now I have to pay $70 to change my ticket to a later date? WTH?

Fred Clauson wrote on Nov 22, 2008 10:49 AM:

Maybe it isn't the schedule as much as the price to go to Portland.

Flyer wrote on Nov 22, 2008 8:53 AM:

I used to fly to Portland all the time on Horizon but then you got the new airport, we lost Horizon, and we have to pay for parking. To top this off, the economy sucks! I work at the college and in October I had to start paying for the increase in my health insurance which is almost $200. To make up for this I cut travel, dining out and clothing from my budget. There may be no Christmas this year.

I'm not complaining, I still have a job and a roof over my head.

I know I am not alone. There simply is no money to travel. When the economy picks up, your flights will fill again.

Marcia wrote on Nov 22, 2008 8:32 AM:

here is also a problem with the price to fly from North Bend to Portland. You can fly 1/2 way across the United States for the same price!

Last trip to the Portland airport I chose to drive rather than fly.

Coos Bay Resident wrote on Nov 22, 2008 6:42 AM:

Why is this a surprise? All the Californians that have moved up here and driven up housing prices need to get back down to where they came from. Maybe we could sell them a one-way ticket.

RB wrote on Nov 22, 2008 6:42 AM:

Get your data more objectively, what? Given all of us that have quit on the "airport", do you not think that is a valid reason? i.e., locals who used to fly to Portland have quit, while immigrant locusts from california jump at the chance to fly South. You may not like it, but that is the way it seems to a lot of folk here abouts. Ignoring us will not improve your business model.
