Chess competition a nail-biter
There was no cheering at last weekend’s Southern Oregon Chess League competition at Coquille High School.
That’s because silence was needed for the intense concentration as Coquille, Marshfield and Oakland varsity and junior varsity teams competed in the league’s first match up.
Coquille overwhelmed the competing schools. First round was Coquille vs. Oakland. After an hour, the last Oakland player succumbed to a checkmate. The score for Coquille was 5-0 for both teams.
Second round was between Marshfield and Oakland. Games were a bit longer, but Marshfield varsity beat Oakland with a 5-0 score. Oakland’s junior varsity team succumbed to a 2-3 loss.
Third round was Coquille vs. Marshfield.
Jessi Ross on Coquille Varsity struggled after losing a few minor pieces, but managed to beat out Marshfield’s Brandon Monroe in the end game. Ivy Hallmark was down a few pieces but managed a draw in the end game. Coquille Varsity beat Marshfield 4.5-0.5.
Junior varsity’s Kaitlyn Davidson struggled after dropping a queen but managed to produce a royal fork to even the playing field and went for a win. Coquille junior varsity ended up 5-0.
The next Southern Oregon Chess League match is tentatively scheduled Dec. 13 and will include Sutherlin and Roseburg.
