Starting Jan. 1, parking at the North Bend airport will cost $6 a day, with no weekly discount.

Coos County Airport District commissioners set the fee in a unanimous vote Thursday.

The commissioners already had set the hourly rate last month: $2, with the first two hours free.

The new daily fee at Southwest Oregon Regional Airport will generate $175,751 annually if the 149 spaces are 65 percent filled, according to an analysis. This amount, combined with revenue from the hourly fee, would bring in an annual $208,367. The hourly fee is expected to bring in $28,116 for 639 hours in 22 spaces.

“Five percent or less taxpayers in Coos County use this airport,” said Airport District Chairman Mike Lehman. “I’d like them to pay for it.”

Lehman proposed the $6 daily fee as a compromise between higher and lower proposals. He also proposed forgoing a weekly discount.

The rejected discount would have meant not charging for the seventh day, but it would cost the airport more than $17,000 a year.

Two commissioners, Joe Benetti and Clair Jones, at first pushed for the lowest of the options presented to them — $5.

“I want to keep it as reasonable as possible,” Jones said on a conference call.

Commissioner John Briggs wanted to charge $8 — the amount at the opposite end of the scale. He emphasized the importance of putting away cash to pay for repairs or replacement costs. The automated parking system has an estimated lifespan of seven to 10 years.

Parking fees eventually could save taxpayers money, he said.

“We need to generate outside revenues so we can reduce property taxes,” Briggs said.

The budget for the fiscal year starting July 1 called for $884,000 from property taxes to help pay for salaries and upkeep of the airport.

Ultimately, all the commissioners jumped on Lehman’s $6-a-day compromise.

“Everything in moderation at this point,” Jones said.

The automated parking system, manufactured by Sysparc of Van Nuys, Calif., will cost about $230,000 including installation. It’s expected to pay for itself within a year. The equipment will arrive any day now, and installation will begin immediately.

To the idiots that keep pointing out that only the rich are using the air terminal... Duh? Clean up your store front, clean up your yard, wash your car, pay your taxes, do your job, and most of all let the rich spend their money here instead of somewhere else! When gas prices were so high did you continue to buy gas? You complained, but you still bought it huh? I thought so. If you have to fly out of or into this area then you can complain all you want, but you still have to get to the terminal. Some will pay $6.00 a day or some will take a cab or get a ride.

Citizen wrote on Nov 28, 2008 9:12 AM:

Oops! It sounds like if you are using the air terminal that you are being asked to pay more for it than if you are not. It's like hotels...If you stay in them they cost more than if you don't. As for security, if you can't afford the $6 a day then what's in your car that somebody really wants? It sounds like the airport has there finger on the pulse of it's patrons. If you can't give up $6 bucks you'll find somebody to take you to the terminal and pick you up. How much does a cab cost?

Coos County Airport District commissioners clowns raise ticket prices 2 and elminate 230K machines wrote on Nov 28, 2008 9:03 AM:

What are you Coos County Airport District commissioners clowns thinking? Raise ticket prices $2 would gather more revenue by having everyone pay vs $6 parking fee with 230K machines (That last ONLY 7 to 10 years & will break down alot) where most will be just dropped off at the front door & pay NOTHING!!!!

Local Bum wrote on Nov 26, 2008 9:12 PM:

I called Portland, who told me their fee was $8 a day. What you get for it is a secure area to keep your car. For $6 a day, you get what?

I want to know what we get for paying a airport manager $100+k a year?

to what a shame wrote on Nov 26, 2008 9:56 AM:

I agree. The airport board complains that not enough people are flying to Portland from here and yet they implement a parking fee to discourage people even more. As you said DUMB DUMB DUMB.

What a Shame wrote on Nov 26, 2008 7:11 AM:

Those of you talking about trading a meal for a parking space...consider this...what if the fast food place charged you $XXXX amount of money to park in THEIR parking lot just so YOU could go into THEIR business and spend YOUR money. Same thing no matter how you look at it. Dumb dumb dumb. Let the do gooders have their golfers airport, I will never use it.....

Gary Poifair wrote on Nov 25, 2008 12:40 PM:

Most people may not think twice about paying $6 for a fast food meal, however the last time I checked, we didn't have to pay a restaurant district tax on top of that.

To Fnord wrote on Nov 24, 2008 5:56 PM:

I agree nobody thinks twice about spending 6 bucks on a single meal. But people do think twice about about spending 6 bucks for 14 meals. Most people don't fly out for just one day. For each day you are on vacation the price adds up. Add to that the higher fares out of North Bend and it is losing game.

Kris wrote on Nov 24, 2008 4:34 PM:

I'm not rich and I use the airport!

What a Shame wrote on Nov 24, 2008 2:57 PM:

Its too bad that the Airport Board does not get off their high horses. Use your brain for once and quit sitting on it. If you want to do us a favor, shut down the airport and see how many prople really care. Only the rich and the golfers would yell. Why don't you let the Dunes build their own airport and quit raising the proces on everything at the North Bend airport. The working poor cannot afford you anymore.

fnord wrote on Nov 24, 2008 2:54 PM:

here's what it has to do with it, person-who-projects-their-own-issues. Nobody thinks twice about spending six bucks at a fast food place, for a single meal, but OH NO! SIX DOLLARS FOR A DAY OF PARKING! CAN'T HAVE IT!

You know if you ignore the fnords, we won't eat you.

what does a cheese burger value meal have to do with parking at the airport. do you just post to see yourself if the paper or what?

darla wrote on Nov 23, 2008 8:08 PM:

The simple fact is that a lot of money has been spent on foolish things and I think most people are getting really tired of bailing out fools... Sorry, Commissioner Jones, but your thought in keeping things "reasonable" is coming a little too late.

moonpenny wrote on Nov 23, 2008 10:28 AM:

We never park our cars there when we do fly out. We have our kids take us. Not going to gouge me for your white elephant.

Resident wrote on Nov 22, 2008 7:28 PM:

It doesn't matter whether people pay to park in other places or not. People drive to Eugene and Portland as central hubs, but no one comes specifically to NB to use our airport. So it is the locals who are being asked to support the airport via parking fees, without any evidence that the board cares about their desires. Whether you think locals are whiny or not, we still have the power to economically make or break most endeavors in this county.

To HAL wrote on Nov 22, 2008 3:47 PM:

Where on earth do you pay $30 a DAY for parking?

Liz wrote on Nov 22, 2008 3:16 PM:

You know, if the flights were on time, the plane was comfortable, and the staff as accommodating as Horizon was, then I might just pay the parking fee. But, I have flewn 5 times with Sky West now - all of which were LATE leaving and I missed all subsequent flights, and my luggage didn't get to me until 2 days later on TWO occassions. So, yeah... I won't bother to pay for parking on top of all the hassle that Sky West is.

I miss Horizon.

den wrote on Nov 21, 2008 7:06 PM:

I predict by the end of 2009 the airport will be a lost cause for commercial travelers. The Board members will be proposing a bond issue to stay a float. There will be many changes. New board members. There will always be people who can, and want to spend your money for their agendas.

George B. wrote on Nov 21, 2008 6:49 PM:

Everyone in Coos County should have free parking. And a free lunch too. Everything free. That's the attitude!! Once you people learn that NOTHING is free in this world, you'll be on the road to recovery.

Hal wrote on Nov 21, 2008 6:29 PM:

This whole string is a little hard to take seriously. I'm used to paying $30.00/day for parking at the airport I use. I'd say $6.00 seems like a reasonable fee. These are days of "user-pay" with the view being to cut taxes. Why is that bad? Times are tough, but let's be honest...how much do you put out for coffee or cola in a day?

Opinions are like noses wrote on Nov 21, 2008 4:30 PM:

Do some of you really believe that having Bandon Dunes golfers flying in and out of SORA is a bad thing? WOW! Ask the owners of the shuttle services if they would still be in business without BD traffic? How many local people would be unemployed without the BD travelers renting cars? Some of you just do not get it!!! Bandon Dunes is a plus for the local area whether YOU are a golfer or not. Get off your NIMBY attitudes!

LW wrote on Nov 21, 2008 1:34 PM:

Get over it already people!! Most airports charge for parking why should we be any different. I don't think I have ever been to an airport who doesn't charge for parking. We have been spoiled all these years not having to pay. Maybe the airport should have been charging for parking at the old airport and then people wouldn't have another complaint about the new airport.

Disgusted at Abuse wrote on Nov 21, 2008 1:09 PM:

If we are going to have to pay for parking, then at the very least make it a decent parking lot. The spaces are wayyy to narrow and not at all pedestrian friendly as a previous post pointed out. Additionally, get some grass planted in there and not that ugly dirt. What a waste of taxpayer money. Why do we keep voting for these idiots on the board??

TO U R TOO CHEAP... wrote on Nov 21, 2008 12:52 PM:

Just because people would rather go to Eugene or Portland to get on an airplane and express their opinions about our local airport on here doesn't necessarily make them whiners. I would rather read a “whiny” post than an ignorant and rude one such as yours.

will fly eugene wrote on Nov 21, 2008 12:39 PM:

Parking at the Eugene airport is $8.00 per day with a weekly rate or $48.00. So even paying for gas you save by getting a much lower airfare out of Eugene.

to u r too cheap wrote on Nov 21, 2008 12:30 PM:

It may cost $50.00 to drive to eugene and parking a little more but the ticket prices out of Eugene are alot less. Example Eugene to Portland roundtrip is 159.00. North Bend to Portland is 305.00. Eugene to Seattle is 239.00. North Bend to Seattle is 484.00.

Gene wrote on Nov 21, 2008 12:26 PM:

Wow, $50 for gas to Eugene and back? I think you need to look for a newer car than a 75 Suburban.

Total BS if I say so wrote on Nov 21, 2008 12:17 PM:

So the local resident that uses the airport will have to pay to park BUT the golfers that come in get yet another free ride as they will be picked up by shuttles. This whole airport was a sham from the get go by Bandon Dunes. They should have to pay the extra bucks building of this cost and the overruns that now require paid parking. Bend Over for yet another albatross folks!

u r too cheap to drive and to stupid to fly wrote on Nov 21, 2008 12:07 PM:

So drive yourself to Eugene (at least $50 in gas) then pay $8 a day to park. You will really show how smart you are, though my guess is we will not miss your $6 a day down here (or your whiny personality)

NB BRYAN wrote on Nov 21, 2008 12:03 PM:

Wow, $6 a day to park in a lot that isn't very secure, now that's value! I guess they have to do something to make some money since fewer people are flying out of here because they are charging such outrageous fares. I will continue to drive to Eugene to fly. Sadly, our airport is a joke.

I hope scrap metal prices are up for these soon to be rusted 230K useless machines taking up space wrote on Nov 21, 2008 12:02 PM:

Anyone with a 10 year old IQ would know to raise ticket prices a dollar or two, instead of placing 230K machines that will break down on a continous basis here due to wind, rain & salt air & people will just be dropped off at the front door! I will NEVER pay one cent for parking & will use a taxi if I must! Waste of tax payers money all the way around, their wages, their 230K machines & their New Airport that still doesn't have a long term airline company to justify it's existance!

Common Sense wrote on Nov 21, 2008 11:53 AM:

To Coos County Airport District commissioner clowns,

I guess it would be too easy to just raise ticket prices a couple bucks to make MORE $$$ where everyone would pay & would elminate the 230K soon to be rust bucket machines, since I & everyone I know will NOT be parking at the airport any time soon! After you finally find out the errors in your inexperience decision making of parking fee's & have to sell the rusty machines for scrap metal....please do the area a favor & QUIT immediately, so someone/anyone else can step in & do your job correctly.....one word to describe these useLESS clowns...."PATHETIC"!

same here wrote on Nov 21, 2008 11:31 AM:

I'll drop a few bucks on a cab and get curb service, rather than pay for what should be free, in a disorganized and pedestrian-unfriendly parking lot we're already paying for. hey airport, this fee doesn't touch your tourists and golfers who are picked up and dropped off. Think about who you're impacting here, and how it will weigh heavily the next time a vote comes up. Your tourists and golfers can't vote here. We can.

Flyong from Points Elsewhere wrote on Nov 21, 2008 11:31 AM:

I am one of the many business frequent flyers who is voting with my feet... I now drive to Portland and Eugene due to the cost of a R/T ticket from NB... and in a cost-cutting economy I am looking to save wherever and whenever possible... this is a BAD time to charge for parking... the revenue projections will never pan out and folks just won't pay this fee... Yellow Cab will benefit and I'm sure Mr. Lesher is thanking you for this parking fee...his cabs will be busy!

Our family averages 6 round trips to/from Portland each year, year after year. So, we are small potatoes and probably have no say in whether or not to have pay parking. BUT, we will no longer use this bloated and ugly facility. We will work to spread word of our decision to anyone who will listen.

No wonder the terminal was built "out of sight". Those who work in the terminal have a degree of privacy that is now guaranteed by having few parked cars either.

Phooey on this pay parking stuff and the tens of thousands for art work, too. This airport thing spends more time in the local news than any other town I have ever heard of.

This just simply ain't San Francisco, people! Let's just let it flop.

I hope you're happy, having had your taxpayers foot the bill so outfits like Bandon Dunes, etc. could have the old terminal.

The old terminal may have been old, but locals were happy with it. We were happy with a station wagon and didn't need a Cadillac that most here couldn't afford, let alone the increase in airfare and now parking.
