Crash suspect due in court

Thursday, November 20, 2008 |
A hearing to determine whether the man arrested in the accident that injured Lakeside Mayor Orville Nelson will stand trial has been rescheduled for Friday.
Nicholas Mason appeared before Judge Michael Gillespie on Tuesday morning for a change of plea hearing, but will reappear on 11 a.m. on Friday. The schedule shift was due to an apparent misunderstanding over when Mason would appear in court.
Mason faces charges of second-degree assault, possession of heroin, two counts of second-degree criminal mischief, driving under the influence of intoxicants, reckless driving and recklessly endangering.
Nelson was injured on Sept. 6 when he was climbing back into his parked pickup at the T’ree Acres Shell Gas Mini-Mart and Deli off U.S. Highway 101 in Lakeside. A pickup careened through the parking area, striking Nelson and kept on going until it crashed.
A medical crew flew Nelson to Legacy Emanuel Hospital and Health Center in Portland in critical condition. He left the hospital on Sept. 30. After undergoing physical therapy at Baycrest Village in North Bend, he is recovering at home.
Mason’s court appearance Friday will either establish a plea agreement or set a trial date.
