Jody McCaffree (The World, Nov. 4) continues to make assertions as to the dangers of liquefied natural gas to the community, its people and its economy.  She rarely provides hard evidence to support her position and when she does it is often highly selective and often misleading or downright untrue. Her arguments tend to display her lack of understanding of the issues.

I share Ms. McCaffree’s passion for energy independence in general and renewable energy sources in particular. This is a long-term quest and we need practical alternatives until those sources are available. By any metric, natural gas in any form has proven to be as safe, reliable and clean as any hydrocarbon fuel source we have. We should promote its use until better sources of energy are economically viable.

Ms. McCaffree asserts that LNG will “cost our economy dearly” but she fails to say how. In fact, the LNG project will inject $30 to $40 million per year in wages, taxes and material purchases not counting economic stimulus through the construction phase.  Moreover, it will provide a minimum of 100 to 120 direct and indirect family wage jobs giving our young people opportunities they do not have now.

She would have you believe that 151 miles of pipeline will be seized by eminent domain. In fact, history would show that the vast majority of right-of-way acquisition is accomplished by fair and successful negotiation of price or trade with between landowners and pipeliners. Even eminent domain requires fair compensation to be paid to landowners.

Ms. McCaffree says that “LNG is a bad investment of Enron-like proportions” but with no explanation of the parallel. She goes on to cite examples of LNG terminals in the Gulf Coast area, but fails to explain the circumstances. Cheniere’s layoff of 200 workers came at the completion of the construction phase of the project, not the termination of operations. Cheniere’s economic risk is a function of building a facility with very high leverage and no contracted source of supply or market. It is an outright speculative venture and may win or lose big. Jordan Cove will not be built without solid supply and market contracts in place with companies of sufficient financial strength to guarantee performance once it is permitted.

Ms. McCaffree’s aims are laudable. Her understanding of the practicalities is lacking and her propensity to disseminate misinformation is just plain wrong.

you people,

Like your comment had any factual good reading substance in it! I deal with facts as stated below, but still waiting for your wise position on this LNG SCAM using facts?

it is scary how ignorant the people on both sides are.

FYI, I stop reading any response when " SCAM, sham, con," etc. are part of it. It is disrespectful and I think shows a bias that makes me quit reading any further. I'm looking for information-not childish name calling.

You people are appalling. You are nothing but a bunch of NIMBYs. Left wing, transplanted Californians and looney locals screwing up people's chance to make a living. A decent living at a family wage. If trees weren't cut down, you'd have nothing to wipe your butts with. How would you like to live in that world?

Mr. Baron,

Please explain how a terminal that receives all of its LNG from foreign sources promotes American energy independence?

Thank you!

Is it nor ironic that below this article about LNG, there is an ad about Coos Bay being a great place to retire or buy a second home.It wont be if LNG comes to town. We cant have it both ways. Most people I know have their plans on hold till this thing is settled either way.

It is sad that Jon Barton is permitting himself to be the stooge of the LNG developer. Those of us who have known Jon for many years and we have read what he has written before know that he did not write that letter. Listen to Bob Braddock whose statements do not support what Mr. Barton writes.

I am wondering where Jon Barton has gotten his information -- you know, where are his sources for proving his statements -- such as providing something more substantial than rumor and personal opinion. Surely he can cite his his own sources after criticizing the writer of an article for not citing her sources.

All tax revenues will be dumped into oregons other scam programs wrote on Nov 21, 2008 8:01 AM:

Just think Oregon citizens get a explosive/risky, expensive, increases our dependence on foreign countries for our future energy needs, air polluter that will take land (80 foot wide section) from 400 Oregon citizens that trashes our beautiful coast just so rich foreign investors can become richer & Northern California gets some gas & on top of that the little tax revenue coming from this LNG SCAM will be dumped into Oregon other SCAM failed programs like Welfare, Rail line, New Airport, etc! A GREAT deal for the rich foreignors & Northern California, BAD deal for the majority of Oregon citizen tax payers that live here!

I stand behind every word stated in my Op-Ed of Nov 4th and even words cut from my original submitted piece. Perhaps Mr. Barton is the one who is uninformed. Try reading, "North America Natural Gas Supply Assessment" by Navigant Consulting - Jul 08; "Production Cost Modeling for High levels of Photovoltaics Penetration" - Technical Report - Feb 08; "Sun, Sun, Sun, Here It Comes" at oregonbusiness.com; Carnegie Mellon University Report on Lifecycle Greenhouse Gas Emissions of LNG; Letter from Peak Sun Silicon in the FERC Library for Jordan Cove (500 jobs at Peak Sun could be on the line if West Coast LNG terminals are allowed to proceed.). There are volumes of credible studies and credible experts for those who care to take the time to learn from someone other than gas industry salesmen.

Great letter. Thanks! Looks like you will be bludgeoned by the anti-anti's now.

SCAM... I just wanted to say it. I, like the anti-LNG people, don't really know how to apply it, either.

truthordare wrote on Nov 20, 2008 1:42 PM:

Mr. Barton, you are doing exactly what you accuse Mrs. McCaffree of doing, namely making unsubstantiated statements and spreading misinformation. You say the LNG project will inject $30 to $40 million per year in wages, taxes and material purchases. (It makes sense not to include dollars during the construction phase since that is temporary.) What is the dollar breakdown of these millions? How much from each category and based on what expectations? Do you have a list of the 100 to 120 direct and indirect family wage jobs this project will generate? What are the studies or research papers you are basing your statements on? If I remember correctly, the County pipeline was supposed to bring in scads of new businesses and be a boon to the local economy. The only new business in the area due to the pipeline is Northwest Natural Gas. And did you ask the property owners dealing with that pipeline how they liked the process and how fairly they were treated? What were the results to their property from the pipeline?

Jon Barton,

Your quote: "I share Ms. McCaffree’s passion for energy independence in general and renewable energy sources in particular. This is a long-term quest and we need practical alternatives until those sources are available"

Solar, wind, wave, etc., these clean inexpensive energy sources are available today vs this old polluting energy source of Lng, which only makes the USA more dependent on foreign countries for our future energy needs (Anyone remember the 1970's oil embargo of OPEC, where OPEC cut back selling oil to the USA & prices tripled in a very short period of time!)! Ever hear of Global warming also, which is caused by polluting fossel fuels as this Lng SCAM is doing! This Lng SCAM is going to lead us into becoming a 3rd world nation that in time will be polluting the planet & begging foreign countries for more fossel fuels! This Lng SCAM is a bad idea for Oregon & for the USA PERIOD!

Jane wrote on Nov 20, 2008 12:08 PM:

What part of the following don't you understand:

1) Structure at Jordan Cove will NOT meet DLCD 2002 Tsunami zone reqrmts (Appealed decision of county & LUBA of ignoring DLCD 2002 engineering reqrmts).

2) UNSafe situation of LNG ships having known 2 mile hazard burn zone & traveling within a 1/2 mile of populated area here (affecting 17,000 people).

3) California & many areas have rejected LNG for being a air polluter.

4) LNG is 2X more expensive then natural gas used today by Oregon citizens.

5) How 400 Oregon property owners will be FORCED to sell their land to foreign investors.

6) How explosion in Appomattox County, VA could happen here at Jordan Cove (Miles instead of yards).

7) How LNG ship will have negative effect on fishing boats & NEW Airport flights.

8) How no local will qualify for any of the jobs at Jordan Cove.

This LNG SCAM is not worth the little tax money collected from vs HUGE risks involved! Every poll taken & even Oregon's Dept of Energy says NO to this SCAM!
