Expensive flights drive away fliers

Thursday, November 20, 2008 |
As a retired couple for the past seven years, we always traveled from North Bend to Portland via Horizon at least three times a year. Costs were reasonable. The airport commissioners negotiated a poor contract with United as their backs were against the wall.
Example — today’s travel one way was $172 with two checked baggage for $65; after Nov. 10, 2008, a second checked bag will go up to $50. For a party of two this equals $474 to fly 230 miles. Round-trip $325 plus the baggage charge.
My wife just booked a round-trip flight from North Bend to New York via Portland and Dulles for $399. You figure!
Other option: Rent a car in Coos Bay for $40, drop off at airport, $75 plus gas, $40. This totals $155 — a savings of $319. Leave a day earlier and stay at a nice hotel with breakfast and still save at least $200.
This airline is not for the leisure traveler. United brokered a win/win contract, with the public making up the difference if the seats are not filled. The airport does have an opt-out clause within a reasonable timeline.
My friends, we do have other options to travel north if you are flexible.
