Vandals damage peace trail site

Wednesday, November 19, 2008 |
The U.S. Forest Service and Curry County Crime Stoppers are asking for the public’s help in finding the culprit responsible for damaging the Wheeler Ridge Japanese Bombing Site Trail near Brookings.
The historic trail suffered about $6,000 in damage when vandals defaced four interpretive panels, a post maker, carved racist symbols in a newly installed redwood bench and removed several cinder blocks from a retaining wall, according to a Forest Service press release.
“This intentional defacement of public property is disappointing to everyone that has been involved in preserving the area,” Gold Beach District Ranger Alan Vandiver said.
A citizen reported the damage to the Curry County Sheriff’s Office on Oct. 26 and Forest Service officers are investigating.
Those with information about the vandalism or who noticed suspicious activity are asked to call the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest Gold Beach Office at (541) 247-3600 or the Brookings office at (541) 412-6000.
