GRESHAM (AP) — A nonprofit store in Gresham that gives Christmas toys to families in need was hit Monday by its fifth burglary in just over a month, police said.
The nonprofit Toy ‘n’ Joy was founded by Portland Fire and Rescue in 1914. In the past, east Multnomah County families in need would receive Christmas toys for children aged 1-12.
In most cases the thieves stole money from a donation jar, said Sgt. Michael LeDuc of the Gresham Police Department.
Because of the break-ins and thefts, CEO Deborah Hamaker said this year’s donations will be limited.
She said much of the money that would have gone to buy toys will have to be spent repairing damage. |
