BERKELEY, Calif. — Pete Newell, the Hall of Fame basketball coach who won an NCAA championship and Olympic gold medal and later tutored some of the game’s greatest big men, died. He was 93.

His death was confirmed by the University of California, the school Newell coached to a national title in 1959. Newell, who had been living near San Diego, had a serious lung operation in 2005.

He died at about 10:45 a.m. in Rancho Santa Fe at the home of retired Dr. Earl Shultz, who played for Newell at Cal and had watched over him for the last several years.

Shultz said Newell had a meeting scheduled with Jerry West and a writer who was working on a book about West, who played for Newell’s 1960 U.S. Olympic basketball team.

Newell coached for 14 years at San Francisco, Michigan State and California before doctors advised him to give it up because of the emotional toll. His final coaching job came in the 1960 Olympics, when he took a U.S. team led by Oscar Robertson, West and Jerry Lucas on a dominant run to a gold medal in Rome.

Garnett and O’Neil draw ire of the league

Boston Celtics star Kevin Garnett was suspended for one game and Phoenix center Shaquille O’Neal was fined $25,000 by the NBA on Monday for separate incidents over the weekend.

Garnett was penalized for hitting Milwaukee’s Andrew Bogut in the face near the end of Saturday’s game. Garnett will sit out tonight when the Celtics host the New York Knicks.

O’Neal was fined for verbally abusing an official and failing to leave the court quickly after being ejected Sunday night against Detroit. He was previously fined $35,000 on Friday for his role in altercation in a game between the Suns and Houston Rockets.

Rebecca Soni won female race (200 breaststroke) and breakout performer.

Torres says she plans to continue competing

NEW YORK — Dara Torres just can’t stay away from swimming.

The 41-year-old, who won three silver medals at the Olympics in August, wouldn’t commit to competing again when the Beijing Games ended. But Torres said Monday at USA Swimming’s annual Golden Goggle Awards banquet that if she can stay healthy, she hopes to race at the world championships next summer.

Credit Mark Schubert, the U.S. team’s coach and general manager. Torres recalled that he told her, “Why stop? You’re still improving.”

“He knows how to dangle the carrot,” Torres said with a laugh.

She’s not sure how long she’ll keep competing.

“I don’t want to be one of those athletes who’s at the top of their game then falls fast,” she said. “I have to be smart about it.”

Cubs, Yankees will christen new stadium

NEW YORK — The Chicago Cubs will play the first exhibition games at the new Yankee Stadium, meeting New York on Friday night April 3 and again the following afternoon.

The $1.3 billion ballpark, scheduled for substantial completion by Feb. 17, will host its first regular-season game when the Yankees play Cleveland on April 16.

The Cubs are led by manager Lou Piniella, who won World Series titles with the Yankees in 1977 and 1978.

These will be the Yankees’ first preseason exhibitions at home since a two-game, two-stadium series against the Mets in 1993, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Ticket prices will be announced later.
