Six students from Coquille Martial Arts traveled to Medford last weekend to compete at Chip Wright’s Championship Karate in Medford.

The tournament draws top competitors from Oregon, California and Washington and is the last event for the Coquille group before its own event on Dec. 6.

Angie Morones, a 5-year-old student from Coquille, placed second in 5-7 beginner forms and third in 5-7 flag sparring.

Kaitlyn Davidson, also from Coquille, was second in 10-11 advanced forms and third in 10-11 advanced sparring.

Tianna Huffman, an 8-year-old student from Coquille, placed third in 8-9 beginner forms.

Gabe Reab of Coquille was third in 10-11 advanced beginner sparring.

Tasha Napier of Eugene was second in 15-17 advanced traditional forms, third in weapons and third in creative forms.

Kayla Houston of Myrtle Point also competed.

Coquille Martial Arts strives to give students a positive place to work out after school, offering lessons in three different arts. Instructor Karen Saxton said martial arts encourages goal setting, good grades and good sportsmanship and is not about hurting someone else, but rather about improving oneself.

Coquille Martial Arts will host its annual tournament on Dec. 6 at Coquille Valley School.

The tournament is open to all martial arts students and their instructors.

Medals will be offered for the top three places in each category and sword sets will be offered for grand champion forms.

Competition will begin as early as 9 a.m.

Spectators are welcome to attend, and there is a small admission fee, which can be made as a tax-deductible donation to A Hopeful Tomorrow, which provides scholarships for students who would otherwise be unable to participate in martial arts.
