A Charleston woman remained in critical condition this morning in a Portland hospital after being struck by a car Saturday night in Coos Bay.

The accident happened as Jack Granby, 66, of Coos Bay was southbound in the 1900 block of Woodland Drive, police said.

His 2006 Buick SUV struck 38-year-old Theresa Colvin as she wandered into the street to retrieve her dog. A person called 911 dispatchers at 7:02 p.m. to report a pedestrian had been hit by a car in front of the location. The caller reported the pedestrian was trapped under the vehicle, according to a Coos Bay police press release. Bay Cities Ambulance paramedics arrived prior to police and freed the woman, who was unconscious.

Police determined Granby was driving the speed limit when his vehicle struck Colvin.

The ambulance took Colvin to Bay Area Hospital, where she was treated and then flown to Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland, with a serious head injury. Colvin remained in critical condition this morning, according to a hospital official.

Colvin’s dog was not injured in the crash.

At this time, no criminal charges are expected to be filed, but the case will be forwarded to the Coos County District Attorney’s Office for final review, a standard procedure for this type of crash, the press release said.
