The Coos County Sheriff’s Office is launching an all-day search of Coos Bay’s North Spit today to find a missing man.
Edward Stutesman, a 61-year-old North Bend man, was last seen on Oct. 26. His family reported him missing Oct. 30. On Monday, a U.S. Bureau of Land Management ranger found Stutesman’s car abandoned on the spit.
North Bend Police, Coos County Mounted Posse, Coos County Search and Rescue, Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Coast Guard searched the area earlier this week but didn’t find any sign of him.
The biggest push will be today.
Coos County Sgt. Pat Downing said at least 50 people will join in the search including Douglas and Coos county search and rescue teams, along with the counties’ mounted sheriff’s posses. They’ll focus their search on the spit south of the BLM boat ramp, heading toward the ocean beginning about 9 a.m.
There are no plans to continue the search after today unless new evidence is found, Downing said.
All sand roads on the North Spit will be closed from 7 a.m. to dark, while they conduct the search.
“It’s supposed to be really nice, too, so we’re thinking people will be coming out,” said Megan Harper, BLM Public affairs specialist.
That closures means there will be no ATV, horse or hiking access to the BLM portion of the spit. The beach will remain open to people who access it from the U.S. Forest Service’s Horsfall Beach area.
Stutesman was known to hike in the area. He is described as 5 feet, 11 inches tall and weighs about 170 pounds. He was last seen wearing blue jeans and a plain red sweatshirt. He has brown hair, brown eyes and wears glasses.
Anyone with information regarding Stutesman should call the North Bend Police Department at 756-3161.
