COQUILLE — The 700 block of North Folsom Street was quiet Thursday morning. Neighbors walked their dogs and enjoyed a break in the weather.

The only reminder that there was a fatal shooting Monday night was a Coquille patrol car parked outside a single-story house cordoned off with police tape.

Neighbors were reluctant to talk about the incident that left Patricia Shaw dead. And police have little more to say today other than that they are continuing to investigate.

Neighbors who were home Thursday said they never heard a gunshot.

They also didn’t know much about the woman who lost her life.

“I don’t think I ever even met her,” said Wally Collins, who lives near the intersection of Folsom and Seventh Street.

Shaw moved to the neighborhood in July from Texas with her young son.

Pearl Tichenor lives two houses away from the scene of the shooting and had only met Shaw in passing. She said she had gone to bed and didn’t hear any gunshots.

“I can’t say I heard a thing ’til they started showing up,” she said.

Several neighbors said there were as many as 17 police cars that arrived from agencies all across the county.

Collins said he went up to Eugene on Tuesday morning and when he got back, the street was still full of police cars. A police officer has been on duty outside the blue house since the shooting, Tichenor said, and at one point she went out to offer the officer some coffee.

“They put their life on the line more than people realize,” she said.

Coquille police found Shaw, 45, suffering from gun shot wounds at about 9:30 Monday night at 740 N. Folsom St. Medics pronounced her dead at the scene. They had responded to a call from a neighbor about the shooting, Police Chief Mark Dannels said today.

Her son was taken into protective custody on Monday.

Dannels said police still are interviewing people and awaiting test results from the lab. An autopsy took place Thursday and the report hasn’t been completed, Dannels said.

The police department and Coos County Major Crime Team are treating the case as a homicide, though District Attorney R. Paul Frasier said it could have been an accident or a suicide.

Tichenor and Collins didn’t speculate on what may have happened to Shaw on Monday night. Other neighbors very much doubted that she was murdered, suggesting the shooting was self-inflicted or an accident.

Shaw lived at 854 Folsom, about a block away from the house where her body was found. Several vehicles with Texas license plates were outside the house Thursday morning and several dogs barked from within, but no one answered the door.

I cannot believe how horrible some of you are. The rude and inapropriate comments. There was a woman found dead. She has a family. Is everyone around here really that heartless. You discust me.

Seems to me that the people of Coquille are all to quick and look for any reason to slam our city police and D.A. This isn't a t.v. show, investigations taketime,so do lab results, interviews, Obviously if "17" police cars were there, the police got right on the case. They can't make any kind of call on what happened until all results come in. Do we want a hasty decision made and either an innocent person pay for something they didn't do, or a guilty person go free.Give our law enforcement and D.A. our support and the time they need to get all the facts so that the TRUTH, what ever it may end up being, happens. And pray for the families of all involved.

To Back Off:
Sorry if I stepped on a nerve, but in my humble opinion, the DA is not doing his job well. Look at the dockets. I will, however, give the new chief the benefit of the doubt. He is a major improvement over Reaves. Frasier has proven over and over that he is incompetent and inconsistent. As far as my running for DA, I don't have the time between the three jobs I work (even though I have a BA in Education)to keep a roof over my head, gas in the car and food in my kids' bellies.

Some of those comments come across as somewhat insensitive folks. My sons were friends with the slain woman's son. I really hope the authorties in this area can solve the likely crime. Gunshot WOUNDS do not sound like suicide. One wound possibly, more than one...doubtful.

Why are you worrying about the number of police cars that responded? I'm sure that if it was your family member that you would not think that enough responded!!!

To 17 Police Cars.. wrote on Nov 14, 2008 4:47 PM:

It's called a multi-agency call out, representatives/investigators from all the different agencies in the county. They were not all from one agency..The State, Bandon, Myrtle, Coquille, Coos and North Bend all participate in major crime callouts if available..Duh..

ANTImeth wrote on Nov 14, 2008 4:40 PM:

oh wow, are you ever correct on that one MYTWOCENTS on the matter of criminals getting flushed back into the community...just read the docket and you will see these drug dealers and drug users being released the same day they were picked up on possetion! Then given like 17 days in jail once court rolls around.

theotherside wrote on Nov 14, 2008 4:35 PM:

i wonder if they have explored the idea that meth may be involved...searously. nearly all the deaths and crimes in coos county are related to the meth epeademic one way or another.

This must be a mistake...How in the heck can the county afford this ? Im mean where did they all come from ? This was on swing shift. I didn't think there were that many guys on duty....YES, PLEASE BACKOFF...Paul needs more money....

Hoping wrote on Nov 14, 2008 2:18 PM:

Maybe someone in the neighborhood will use a crystal ball to solve what happened there. One thing is for sure they are all deaf, dumb, and, blind to what happens around them.

hmmm wrote on Nov 14, 2008 1:35 PM:

Just because someones charges were dismissed "in the interest of justice" does not mean they are innocent/guilty. What it means is that they chose not to file charges right now. They can be brought back up at any time. Many who are arrested "roll over" on someone else and get some lattitude. And don't blame the DA for someones arrest. If they were arrested for a warrant, there are many safeguards in place. Not to mention that a warrant is a command to arrest signed by a judge.

BACK OFF wrote on Nov 14, 2008 1:21 PM:

Look, "MYTWOCENTS" Frasier does not have some "crystal ball" that he uses to figure out what type of crime was committed. Its a bit more complicated than that.

Unless if you where some fly on the wall watching this "crime being committed" BACK OFF and let the POLICE do there job. Frasier is a very intelligent person! That is why HE was HIRED to do this job. Unless if you think you can do a better job, then why don't YOU run for the DA position!

mytwocents wrote on Nov 14, 2008 12:30 PM:

What.....Frasier can't look in his crystal ball and decide what crime has been commited? Someone will probably be arrested and then released "in the interests of justice"
