REEDSPORT — Police officers arrested a 53-year-old man this morning, following a nearly 12-hour standoff, following a domestic dispute.

Reedsport police officers first responded to a call at 986 Scott Terrace St. around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday to investigate a report that John D. Joy went to the home and confronted his former wife. He reportedly pointed a gun at her, a press release said.

Joy then left the house and went to his home a short distance away, refusing to come out when police went to confront him. Police said they believed he still had a gun and posed a threat to himself and others. He apparently was in the home alone.

Officers evacuated nearby homes, putting families up in a temporary shelter at Reedsport City Hall.

Negotiators from the Coos County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police and the OSP Swat Team went to the scene to help. They remained outside the manufactured home overnight.

Police said Joy had been talking intermittently by phone with police and family members.

Joy, who police said was despondent, remained inside his house until shortly after 5:29 a.m. today. He surrendered after police deployed tear gas. Police arrested him on charges of menacing and unlawful use of a weapon. They were scheduled to take him to the Douglas County Jail in Roseburg.

Police Chief Shawn Essex remained at the house today around 8 a.m., waiting for a search warrant. No one was hurt in the incident.

life goes on in a small town anyway you look at it, this is sad all the way around but you cant blame a girl for trying to protect her dad. seems to me the whole family could use some help to sort things out and this includes kim.

I think this is pathetic. I feel for Kim, the kids, grandkids..John needs mental health help, and locked up. We all gave him another chance, learned to forgive, and forget cuz kim is GREAT..John should NEVER have another chance to destroy anyone...he`s done enough damage to the family, and the residents here. Throw away the key this time....PLEASE PROTECT US!

Thank you all for your comments, good or bad. I am going to continue with my life now! Hopefully my family and I can all move forward as I love my family very dearly and I pray we stick together through this!

To Carlie wrote on Nov 19, 2008 10:36 AM:

It pretty obvious that you have only heard one side of this story. How often are you really in Reedsport to really know that "people want to see him fail" Where have you been the last 17 years when this town welcomed him back, gave him his job back, and supported him? Why is there no mention of this? This town stood by and supported him and Kim through thier life and thought that yes everythign was going to be "ok". I guess it was "ok" as long as things went his way. Carlie if this was "my dad" I wouldn't be in denial and realize that I alone cannot help him. And what about the person that took you in and gave you everything that she could including loving you unconditionally? Did you forget you had a stepmom in all of this? Carlie I am so sorry for what you are dealing with but please wake up, I know you want to help him and everyone wants him to get help but you in total denial

Carlie Joy wrote on Nov 19, 2008 9:38 AM:

Dear FRIEND: Yes everyone is entitled to their own opinion. We all love Dad and he will get help. Thank you all for your support and I hope you all can forgive him as he is a wonderful person with a heart of gold.

FRIEND wrote on Nov 19, 2008 9:14 AM:

This is a very sad time for everyone involved. The thing of it is, yes people have their opinions and they always will. Their are people that do know what is going on and know the story. The town of Reedsport is not to blame for Johns actions. John needs to take blame for his own actions. He needs help, but how do you help someone that does not think they need it? This is going to be a long hard road and Carly you alone cannot do this. People do care about John, but it is in John's mind that the world is against him. Which life deals everyone hard blows but we deal with them, and you don't deal with them the way he has dealt with them. He needs help that you cannot gaurantee he will get. He is in a place right now that if the system works in which I hope it does, they will make him get help.

Carlie Joy wrote on Nov 19, 2008 8:46 AM:

Dear FED UP: What if it was your Dad? I'm glad everyone has an opinion about this w/out even knowing anything. How sad it is you people can talk about and judge what you don't know. I know my Dad is not a saint, and I would bet neither are you or anybody else. He is a wonderful human being who had a breakdown and felt stuck with nobody to help him through his tough times. Now, he can be away from the situation and be with people who love him and care about his well being. Instead of being in Reedsport, where everyone wants to see him fail.

Sad Times wrote on Nov 18, 2008 6:11 PM:

How sad to have such a horrible thing be happening. I know all the family involved is hurting. Carlie Joy I dont think anyone is questioning that your dad loves his kids or his grandkids. I believe that is the last thing that people are worried about. I know you want to get your dad help, but you alone cannot do that. I know you said people need to keep there mouths shut. But Carlie some of us do know whats going on. I find it hard to believe that you know the whole story of the past, you were just a little girl. And yes some of us do know what is going on today. As for the whole family please hang in there times are tough and they will get better.

Fedup wrote on Nov 18, 2008 4:36 PM:

Wow ya poor guy... not! If your child was harmed or even around this you would be singing a different tune! Ya you should probably get your story straight to like actually talk to the other party ! You know that John is not a saint! Get him help and keep him away and ...GROW UP!!

Thanks wrote on Nov 18, 2008 2:17 PM:

Give Thanks to the Reedsport Police for NOT shooting could be because Officer Datan is up there now. Carlie Joy I hope you get your dad help and get him away from this CRUEL area. Unless someone goes through what your family has/is going through they have no business making hurtful comments.

Carlie Joy wrote on Nov 18, 2008 1:22 PM:

What about your stepmom.

Carlie Joy wrote on Nov 18, 2008 9:48 AM:

Just so all of you know this is my Dad you are talking about! He is the most caring unselfish person I have ever known. You want to know about his past? My biological mother paraded me around to all of her boyfriends homes while my dad was working to support his family. And last time, he did not hold his family at gun poing, only himself. Get your facts straight before you start spewing your stupid words. My dad is my life, he loves his grandchildren and his kids. Leave him alone! He does need help and I will get him help! He will never see Reedsport again. I think all of you should keep your mouth shut about what you do not know. You have no idea what really happened and you will never know. I love my Dad unconditionally and I thank God he is alive so he can watch his grandchildren grow.

haley wrote on Nov 15, 2008 12:44 PM:

This creep did this many years ago and almost burnt the house down, lock him up forever, he is a crazy. It seems like he will have to kill someone to accually get a real punishiment, the laws suck in this world.

Reedsport Resident wrote on Nov 14, 2008 2:20 PM:

For the family, I am truly sorry! I have members of my family who also suffer from Bi-Polar. GET HIM HELP! This has happened before. I understand you as his family want to protect him and make excuses.... however, what if he would have killed your kid, his grandchild, or he held one of them hostage for the 12 hours?? Then what would you be saying? We love and care for all of you and John needs help!

Reedsport Friend wrote on Nov 14, 2008 1:37 PM:

This is a horrible thing for all the family involved. But I really dont feel that any harsh words are being said here, its the truth and it can not be ignored. Something needs to be done, with him before he hurts anyone else, physically or mentally. Our prayers go out to the family.

More Family wrote on Nov 14, 2008 11:36 AM:

There is more here than what you see. Bi-polar disease can be a very mysterious illness that affects people in different ways. He needs help! Thank God no one was hurt physically, but all the family involved is hurting now. Spare you harsh words unless you are standing in our shoes!

Family wrote on Nov 14, 2008 7:48 AM:

First of all the presidential debate has nothing to do with this situation, This is my family, that everyone is commenting on, please respect her privacy, and give her time to deal with everything, this is a very hard time for her. Thank you for your support. And by the way think about gun control on assault weapons, and ask yourself if you would supportive of assault weapons if that was your relative with a gun to her head.....

Convicted felon in possession of a firearm, prison history for nearly killing a previous former wife, and this equals bail of $56,250.00, which will cost him $5625.00. Why?
I wonder...will the four police departments be available to protect this "former wife" from the inevitable next assault?

Reedsport Resident wrote on Nov 13, 2008 9:07 PM:

He needs to be placed somewhere so that he cannot abuse anyone else or possibly even kill someone next time. This is the second time he has used this type of violence. Next time it could be his stray bullet that possibly kills one our children and I don't like those odds.

fedup wrote on Nov 13, 2008 7:08 PM:

Is our great court system going to wait for the third strike when this guy kills or do we put him away now? Probibly keep "Rehabilitating him" keep the felons in guns take them away from law abiding citizens way to go Obama!

Wake up wrote on Nov 13, 2008 5:23 PM:

12 hour stand off hmmmm.... isnt that a lot like resisting arrest?

Reedsport parent friend resident... wrote on Nov 13, 2008 4:34 PM:

No this is not the first time documented that this person has used this VIOLENT behavior. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. My hope is that our legal system will take a long hard look at facts past and present then throw away the key!!

Reedsport parent friend resident... wrote on Nov 13, 2008 4:31 PM:

At what point is enough , enough? This is NOT the first time documented that this person has used this type of VIOLENT behavior. I hope someone somewhere in our legal system is going to take a long hard look at this guy, and then THROW AWAY THE KEY!!! Just because he was stopped before he killed someone does NOT under any Circumstances mean that no one was hurt! This was clearly emotional, mental, and physical abuse....ENOUGH!! I am glad my family was not near this nonsense!!

REEDSPORT RESIDENT wrote on Nov 13, 2008 2:41 PM:

The majority of people in Reedsport are Republicans. The only signs that came up missing or destroyed were Democratic yard signs during the campaigns.

Reedsport Resident wrote on Nov 13, 2008 12:49 PM:

Wow, this is actually the second time this man has done this. Last time he held his family hostage at gunpoint. Apparently he was not completely, oh how do the liberals put it, "Rehabilitated".
