Coos Bay firefighters are making repairs to the downtown fire hall after an accident between a school bus and pickup damaged one of the station’s doors.

“We heard a crash and looked up in time to see parts of the bus flying by,” Fire Battalion Chief Mark Anderson said.

The crash happened at about 3 p.m., with the bus and pickup colliding in the middle of the Fourth Street and Anderson Avenue intersection, according to a Coos Bay press release. The bus was driving north on Fourth and the 1989 Nissan Datsun truck was driving east on Anderson when one of the vehicles ran a red light.

Police said the bus, driven by Deborah Talley, 43, of Coos Bay was returning students to Sunset Middle School after an event at Marshfield High School.

None of the 24 students on the bus nor the driver reported injuries. The pickup’s driver, Erick Anderson, 20, of Coquille and passenger Daniel Anderson, 22, of Coos Bay, were taken to Bay Area Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Coos Bay Police Sgt. Chris Chapanar said.

A hospital spokeswoman said both Erick and Daniel were in fair condition this morning.

The school bus was driven from the scene, but the students were transferred to another bus for the rest of the trip back to school.

Anderson said it’s common to have accidents at that intersection, but not to have vehicles actually hit the fire station. The truck destroyed the middle bay door. Anderson said there was minor damage to the undercarriage of a smaller emergency vehicle. The door is scheduled to be fixed by Saturday at an estimated cost of $3,000.

Anderson added that it was fortunate the accident hadn’t happen a few hours earlier when the station had all its trucks and equipment on the driveway. The pickup would have bounced around like a pin ball, he said.

“It could have been much worse if that truck had bumped up against a school bus and then hit a truck,” Anderson said.

The accident remains under investigation.

You should know that traffic signals are controlled by electronics. The electronics are set up to prevent the light from being green in 2 different directions at the same time but if the circuit that prevents this fails then a signal light could be green in all directions. It is very rare but it is not impossible for this to happen.

STEVE wrote on Nov 16, 2008 3:17 PM:

I SAY THE LIGHT MUST HAVE BEEN GREEN IN BOTH DIRECTIONS. BLAME THE CITY!!!

Mr E wrote on Nov 15, 2008 4:19 PM:

Lights green in both directions at the intersection? Who started that rumor? Where is their proof?!
Trust me (as a traffic engineer), though I feel there is some negligence on the part of the Public Works department in Coos Bay, the idea that all lights were green at one time is far fetched.

I suggest someone have proof of this, if they're going to make that accusation.
Remember, a "yellow" light is not the same as a green light. Some intersections have no delay between the time one light goes green and another light turns red. I've driven through that intersection plenty of times in my life, and this fantasy scenario doesn't fly.

Either someone was not paying attention, or someone tried to "beat" the light.

to concerned citizen wrote on Nov 14, 2008 7:53 PM:

was the problem with the light reported?? If it was green in both directions then it is the city's fault or whom ever is responsible for maintaining the light at that intersection. If it was reported before the bus accident and nothing was done than they are even more negligent and someone should be hung.

Mistakes happen...whether it's due to faulty lights or inattentive drivers.

I hope the two men in the truck will be okay.

concerned citizen wrote on Nov 14, 2008 2:21 PM:

If you wern't at the accident and I stress the word accident then please don't make negative comments, lets be concerned about the injured young men and thankful that no children or the bus driver were injured. Also, I for one am extremely sick and tired of hearing about the fire department door it seems a minor part in this whole incident. I know a lady who went through the same light last week and the light was green on BOTH sides. Think about that. Maybe it was not the fault of either party but an accident!

To Bill: Your opinion is your opinion. Sarcasm is a low blow critique that can be done without.
I am not casting blame on either driver. I do hope the two boys are doing better and as a victim of many close calls (I drive with my headlights on all the time now)I can say that most of the close calls weren't by teenagers or young people. My own mother was hit by a car that ran a red light in that same intersection.

Bus driver wrote on Nov 14, 2008 10:19 AM:

I am a school bus driver. I currently work in the Portland area, but I worked for 5 years out of Coos Bay.

I have 2 comments I wanted to share.

First, as bus drivers, we are trained to observe all intersections before we enter and we are to enter the intersection slowly. The bus driver should have seen the vehicle coming and if they were going slowly, they would have had time to stop. If for some reason, the accident still was unavoidable, the damage wouldn't have been so severe.

Second, just because we are driving a big yellow bus, doesn't mean people can see us. Every time there has been an accident up here in Portland, the comment of the other vehicle's driver was "I just didn't see the bus". It does happen.

I am not tring to pass blame on either driver, I am just adding some info for others.

I sure hope the people from the truck will be ok. I hope them speedy recoveries.

veteran bus rider wrote on Nov 14, 2008 9:46 AM:

I rode a bus all 12 yrs of school and was always the last off (not in the same district the whole time) and bus driver are THE safest I know. I would have to say that I would believe a bus driver way before the guys. Eye witnesses are unreliable, like they were standing around obsorbing every detail before it happend, sorry but no.

Amazing wrote on Nov 14, 2008 9:42 AM:

I just want to set the record straight here....its not always the teens that are texting, on cell phones and play loud music while they drive. Within 24 hours of today, I was pushed into another lane because a 40 something year old guy was texting on his phone while driving and then this morning, almost broad sided by a 50 year old something woman who ran a stop sign while she was on her cell phone....so don't assume that the young kids are the only ones who drive irrisponsibly! Most of my experiences of close calls have been with people who are way past the teen years and are old enough to have kids of their own who are driving...so what kind of an example are you setting for our youth???

What a Shame wrote on Nov 14, 2008 7:40 AM:

TO ALL: How stupid can you get. I have been driving for over fourty years and I have NEVER, ever seen both lights at any intersection green at the same time. If you are trying to start a rumor, pick another subject. It is plain that on this one, you plainly don't know what you are talking about. DO-GOODERS AND RUMOR STARTERS. Maybe the City of North Bend should buy the old hotel and the City of Coos bay should buy the Tioga Hotel.....just to put all the RUMORS IN. HA HA

Get a Life wrote on Nov 14, 2008 1:31 AM:

This town is horrible. All of these perfect people who have never made a mistake in their lives just can't wait to cast blame (and rumors) on other people. Even if the young man was at fault, are we all so high and mighty that we can't understand people sometimes make mistakes? Two men are in the hospital, and instead of concern, you all sit at your computers and cast blame. Disgusting!

Learn the Lesson wrote on Nov 13, 2008 11:46 PM:

There is a lesson here to ALL drivers. Please pay attention to each aspect and side of the light. Make sure that the driver of the vehicle will stop at the red light, but also make sure that the lights are red when they are supposed to be. Thank you for those that have learned a lesson from this horrible accident that resulted in 2 people being injured.

Get A CLUE wrote on Nov 13, 2008 11:41 PM:

To those of you ignorant enough to ASSUME that a young driver might have been texting or had music up to loud, or was talking on a cell phone might as well admit that he/she has done the same thing. Do NOT pass judement on someone before you have ALL the facts and what the POLICE say happened. When ALL INVESTIGATIONS are complete, then there is a judgement. Just not youra

DannyErics Friend wrote on Nov 13, 2008 6:47 PM:

Um i think its pretty pathetic how people write things that they are not for sure about and start rumors!! If you weren't there and you don't know then why even speak of what you THINK!! anyways Danny and Eric are good friends of mine and i don't think its right how people can come on here and try to stir up stuff. Like "wondering if this young kid needs to get there eyes checked!" Seriously was that neccesary? Please just don't write things if you don't know anything!

bill wrote on Nov 13, 2008 6:10 PM:

(watched kcby) I am really amazed that kcby was able to even make to this and not some duck in mingus park with a bent feather or covering the guy that does the cooking. But as we all know that there is no better driver than the bus drivers that pull out in front of you so heaven knows it could not have been her fault lets make sure we blame it on the teenagers with their cell phones because we all know that adults dont use cell phones when they drive

Brittany wrote on Nov 13, 2008 4:55 PM:

My friend was on that bus she said the car ran the the red light and the bus tried to stop but she hit the thing and we were waiting for a long time for them to come back I was so happy to see there faces at school the next day!!!

To All wrote on Nov 13, 2008 3:41 PM:

Reports by eye whitnes' state that both lights were green... believe what you want, but keep in mind that the two men injured in this accident (one of which is a good friend of mine) are at Bay Area Hospital currently suffering serious, potentially permanent damage. Accidents happen, otherwise it wouldn't be called an accident, and as someone who has been affected eventhough I was not involved, I would hope to see a little more concern for the two men and their families. Thank you.

Follow up wrote on Nov 13, 2008 3:09 PM:

Hopefully there will be a follow up report by The World so that everyone is informed correctly rather than by hear say . I would like to know who is at fault.

Hey Bill wrote on Nov 13, 2008 2:57 PM:

Yes, she is still driving the children to school.

Local Citizen wrote on Nov 13, 2008 2:22 PM:

I highly doubt the bus driver ran a red light. The driver of the truck was probably too busy texting, talking on their cell phone, or blaring their music to realize that their light had turned red. You mean to tell me they couldn't see a BUS!

watched KCBY last night wrote on Nov 13, 2008 2:22 PM:

The news broadcast this morning had the police officer stating that there were conflicting eye witness reports. Unless you know actually which vehicle ran the light DO NOT presume to say one or the other did. That is spreading a rumor. and I am tired of seeing those printed.

To Bill wrote on Nov 13, 2008 2:20 PM:

Word has it, the driver of the truck ran the red light according to comments made earlier this am, when the World put out the first article on this. So its hard to say what happened. I guess we will have to wait and hope the Police do the investigation on this. From other comments made this am the driver of the truck thought it was Bus #28 , so I am wondering if this young kid needs to get there eyes checked!

Citizen wrote on Nov 13, 2008 2:10 PM:
