The Egyptian Theatre Preservation Association recently eliminated two of its board members. The board voted 11-3 to remove James Aldrich, maintenance director, and Don Van Dyke, stage chairman, at its meeting Oct. 29.

Van Dyke contends the board’s decision was in retaliation to questions he raised about the conduct of the association’s treasurer.

Van Dyke said he contacted the Oregon Department of Justice, suggesting the association had breached its fiduciary duty by allowing the treasurer to make financial decisions without board approval.

Chairman of Fundraising and Membership Rick Shearer said the allegations are frivolous. Jake Weigler, a spokesman in the Department of Justice, said the agency is reviewing Van Dyke’s complaint.

Van Dyke and Aldrich suggest the association has been taken over by a small faction that has deviated from the group’s mission.

Van Dyke provided as an example the difficulty he had in getting copies of the association’s bylaws. The treasurer, Susan Watson, e-mailed him a quote of $95.90 for a copy of the bylaws and other paperwork.

“The truth is, it’s retaliation. They are getting rid of a troublemaker, but they can’t say that,” Van Dyke said.

Aldrich said he took issue with Watson over taking money to make repairs.

“The treasurer didn’t like me spending money, but you need to spend money to do proper maintenance,” he said. “I guess I was a thorn in their side.”

Shearer said the board was having problems with the two men.

“Their actions have been incompatible with the rest of the board,” he read from a statement prepared by himself, Watson and the association president, Anella Dumas, among others.

Shearer also vouched for Watson’s actions.

“She did nothing wrong,” he said.

Watson did not return calls for comment.

Although the Egyptian Theatre Preservation Association operates the theater, it is owned by the city of Coos Bay’s Urban Renewal Agency. At a recent agency meeting, Gene Melton and Mark Daily complimented the group’s work.

“The budget is in the black for a change and the theater board has got its act together,” said Melton.

I heard this morning that their Publicity/Advertising guy quit.

It is a sinking ship. Goodbye Egyptian!

Thank you Coos Bay Council for the $600,000 Albatross.

I am pleased that the Egyptian still exists and is being used. I have am a victim of the 'good ole boy' system too, as have many in this town.....Excuse me, but isn't (wasn't) Michael Gordon (not your average Bean Counter)involved with Lab Band too?

This is ridiculous. I grew up around Jim Aldrich (he was my grandfather's go-to maintenance man) and I can say from personal experience he knows what he is doing and would NEVER over-bill a repair. Jim cares so much about the Egyptian (he grew up around it- working concessions from the time he was a teenager in the 70's!) and it's awful to see him kicked out of a position that seemed to be perfect for him and his expertise. I don't mean to "stir the pot" because I have nothing but respect for the Egyptian board (I wouldn't have been able to put together my concert in august if it weren't for the help they gave me). This whole ordeal flusters me.

City finance department, Assessor's office, Lab Band, Swocc and now the Egyptian? This small town is truly corrupt, what a shame.

If the Egyptian adopted Roberts Rules and deviated from it in any way, could possibly loose the non profit status.
Unfort. its not the only bogus non profit in town that develops bylaws to get under the tax radar, then misuses the "donated" money in ways other than they should be using it. IE: Lab Band. This would not be a surprise if it were true. Perhaps an audit is in order.

The Court of Public OPINION is in session: If anyone in the jury wants the whole story they should attend the monthly Board of Directors meeting on the last Wednesday of the month. Usally, held at Michael Gordons' office on 4th street. Is opinion to the public.

Patience! We're forming a taxpayers revolt group and we should be active in January. Time for the taxpayers to get a vote in how our money is spent. $400,000 of your tax money went for the Egyptian that benefits good ol boy Benetti and few others. Now the good ol,boys want more tax money to repair the old building. Then we read they jettison the board members who want to safeguard your interests. Wow!

Personality politics at it's finest...LOL! Put 2 more victims down to this local disease. Maybe we can just have the board, the Teen Pageant people and a dozen random drunks fight inside, video it and put it on YouTube to show how we do things here in Coos Bay's crumbling away downtown.

Never question anyone in a leadership position in this area, or you'll lose your job.

Too bad most of America has moved past the mentality of the "good old boys (and girls) club"... but not Coos Bay.

A pox on the Egyptian, anyway. The city was swindled by the former owner... some in the city knew it, but the powers that be did not care.

With all the hard work Don has done at the Egyptian, what a nice way of saying thank you. Seems he and Aldrich may have some future meetings with the Oregon Dept.of Justice. But than again, this is the standard tactic when someone ruffles the feathers of local "good ol' boys". Well, we'll see where the bodies lie after the DOJ investigation.
