LONGVIEW Wash. — An Oregon resident is charged with assaulting a man from India, whom he accused of being a member of al-Qaida.

On Saturday night, an Indian-born Kelso man asked a group standing outside a Longview casino for a cigarette. Longview Police Capt. Dan Jacobs said David Lee Katon, 28, of Clatskanie, yelled at the Kelso man, accusing him of being a member of the international terrorist group.

Katon then reportedly followed the victim to his car, reached through the window and slapped him.

When police tried to arrest Katon, he broke free and ran away. Officers used a stun gun to arrest him.

Katon was charged with malicious harassment, a charge included under Washington’s hate crime laws. He was also charged with assault and resisting arrest.
