Panel: Insecticides are a problem in schools

Wednesday, November 12, 2008 |
SALEM (AP) — Two years ago, a Dallas High School teacher was hospitalized after an insecticide labeled “never use indoors” was used inside a classroom. In some cases studied by the Oregon Toxics Alliance, entire schools were evacuated after pesticides were used nearby.
The incidents are among 43 reported in the past 10 years of pesticides used in or near schools, according to a report released Monday by the alliance.
The nonprofit used public records and found 56 cases statewide in which childhood pesticide exposure was reported since 1990.
A State Senate Workgroup on Pesticides In and Around Schools is drafting legislation for the 2009 Legislature.
