Artwalk! looks to help feed area’s families

Artwalk! is Thursday from 5 to 8p.m.  Artwalk!, sponsored by the Coos Bay-North Bend Artwalk! Association, is a self-directed tour of art displays, culture and gourmet food throughout North Bend, Coos Bay, Pony Village Mall and Empire. This month, North Bend is the featured area.

Visitors can start at any of the locations listed below, which will provide maps showing which venues are open for Artwalk!.  For more information, call 756-1989.

North Bend

Artists and galleries in North Bend will help feed local families on Thursday.

Visitors are encouraged to bring two cans of food or a $2 donation for South Coast Food Share, a program of Oregon Coast Community Action. All donations will be contributed to South Coast Food Share, a progam of the Oregon Coast Community Action that provided 1.5 million pounds of food for families in 2007.

Area businesses will continue to collect food for South Coast Food Share throughout November.

Colette’s,

3229 Broadway, suites H&I. 751-1475, will feature artist Alex DeVoe who creates stunning art in many medias.

Coos Head Food Store,

 1960 Sherman Avenue, 756-7264, will feature locally-grown winter squash varieties including Delicata, Blue Ballet, Acorn, Sugar Pie Pumpkin, Sunshine and Carnival. Baked samples will be offered. There also will be a locally grown cranberry dish to try. The wine department will feature wines in all price ranges to accompany Thanksgiving dinner.

Crystal Dolphin Gallery,

 1901 Sherman Ave. 756-1989. A “hot glass” artist, Jason Trebolo, of Florence, will demonstrate how to make marbles and other items with a torch. Jason is very well known for his “Vortex” and “Galaxy” marbles. He also will show his glass jellyfish in marbles, pendants, paperweights and dichroic glass pendants. He will discuss his techniques as he demonstrates on the torch. In addition, anyone bringing in three or more food items for the local food bank can choose one free natural gem from the Gemtank.

Easy Lane Frames & Select Art Gallery,

 3440 Broadway, North Bend 756-7638 (across from KCBY TV Attention) has held over its show,  “Art is a Classy Thing.”  This show spotlights artwork completed by students from classes taken in our gallery.  Classes in the gallery range from watercolor, to collage, to prisma color, to drawing, to beginning pastels and on to kid’s classes. During Artwalk!, some of the instructors will talk about the classes.

Information will be available about upcoming classes that include beginning and intermediate watercolor, and a one-day workshop with collage.

 Epiphany & Co,

 1989 Sherman Ave. 756-7900, in the Historic Odd Fellows Building, North Bend, will be open and exhibiting original works by local artists.

Ten percent of sales made during the November Artwalk! will be donated to Community Action Connect.

Gallery by the Bay,

 2100 Union Ave, will show an eclectic and interesting variety of artwork. The “in-house” artists include calligraphy and pencil sketching by  Bill Blumberg, watercolors by Ina Christensen, Vanessa Jorgensen, and Jean Boynton, needlepoint art by Meadowlark Molyneux, photography by Patricia Heilbronn and granddaughters Kira and Kailan Bjornerud, and paintings by Joanne Hill, and Katie and Danielle McMains. Artist note cards will be for sale.

The Framery,

1774 Union Ave., 756-0797, North Bend, will feature John Thorp’s fused glass.

North Bend Library

 will present a new artist, Bandon’s Tamara Sprague, in November.  She will have her nature paintings up in the conference room. Her reception will be held during Artwalk from 5-7 p.m.

Sozo Tea and Coffee House,

 1955 Union. Visit Sozo Tea and Coffee House with all new art and friendly faces. Come see the latest and enjoy a free 8 ounce Artwalk! latte.  The changing displays of local art on the walls contribute to the ambience of this unique art venue.

Pony Village Mall

The Artist Loft Gallery,

Suite 103, 756-4088, East Wing, presents “Collage A Trois”, a show featuring the works of Pat Snyder, Susan Lehman and Nan Forsberg-Hammons. The show is large and will take both the featured and guest artist areas. Come to the reception to meet and greet these special artists and enjoy this unusual expression of art.

East Wing Art Wall,

 at the East Wing entrance, will feature Acrylics and mixed media by Robin Jenkins of Coos Bay. Jenkin’s art has great variety in styles and approaches to painting.

Heritage Textile Arts Guild Suite,

 157A, is a working studio featuring the most unique handcrafted fiber art items. Headles & Treadles will feature hand-woven yarns and inviting visitors to join the “knit-in.” Refreshments will be served.

The Rose Palette Art Studio & Gallery,

290-7858, will feature new paintings by students, along with Priscilla Wyatt’s work.

Coos Bay

Coos Art Museum,

267-3901. The CAM Biennial shows all Oregon artists — local and statewide, amateurs and professionals. It fills all five galleries. Come in and vote for the people’s choice award.

Leaf’s Treehouse,

175 S. Third, 266-3748 continues presenting the work of Kyla Moen. She is a SWOCC student, who creates art in many mediums. She draws, does clay art, jewelry and other types as well.

Empire

Java Jones Coffee House,

 757 Newmark, Empire, 888-4477, The Worn Out Frets will provide music from 5 to 8 p.m. and free food and drinks, plus artists will be on hand demonstrating. Java Jones will once again feature the artwork of William Melton, who does pen and ink wildlife and coastal themes, will be the featured artist for artwalk. He also builds his own frames out of barn wood and fencing.

Pen and ink work by Katlyn von Salzen will be displayed.  Java Jones now has candles by L & M Gourmet Candles.  Rick Fox is also new to Java Jones with his turned wood. Other artists on display during Artwalk include: Cathy Beckstrom, bird art; Laurie Lee, raku and acrylics; Rod Sullens, watercolors and cards; Ermie Goodrich, watercolors and cards; Curt Hitch, oils, watercolors, 3-D art; Jeannine Huffman, glass jewelry; Lee Wright, photography; Bobbie Kelley, space art acrylics; and Jeannie Wicks, stained glass.

Empire Flea Market,

 1070 Newmark 260-9500, is the NEW Art Department of the Empire Flea Market. This month they feature Ben Phisher and Wayne Durhan. The photo duo gives you a sample of the Northwest’s best landscapes.
