The Southwestern Oregon Community College volleyball team suffered a disappointing loss Saturday, falling to visiting Linn-Benton in four games.
The Lakers now likely are headed for the South Region’s the No. 3 seed to the NWAACC tournament. Southwestern (5-4), which finishes the regular season with a home match against Umpqua on Wednesday, needs a win over the Riverhawks and also needs second-place Clackamas (6-3) to lose at both Linn-Benton and Chemeketa.
Theoretically, the No. 3 seed is worse than the No. 2 seed, in that the first-round foe in the tournament might be a little better.
No matter the opponent, the Lakers will have to play better than they did against the Roadrunners on Saturday.
“We didn’t play consistent enough to win,” Southwestern coach John Speasl said. “Linn-Benton is a very good team that is just not getting their game together after a slow start.”
The result was a 27-25, 11-25, 25-22, 25-13 win for the Roadrunners.
In both the first and third games, the Lakers had three service errors and at least five hitting errors.
“That is a killer in a tight game,” Speasl said. “When you give up eight or nine points in a game, it becomes an uphill battle which underscores the importance of good consistent play.”
There were some highlights for the Lakers.
Kristine Kosinski has 12 kills and no hitting errors and a .429 hitting percentage. Kosinski also had four solo blocks and an assisted block.
“She really had a good match,” Speasl said. “She is a very disciplined player that always comes ready to play.”
Maria Ciccarelli had five solo blocks and an assist. Karen Jensen led the Lakers in serve-receive, passing at a 2.6 rating on a 3.0 scale. Katie Jolliffe passed at a 2.5 rating and Taylor Scott passed 21 serves at a 2.3 rating. Jessica Bond had 21 assists and 18 digs.
The Lakers host Umpqua at 7 p.m. Wednesday and then have a week off before the NWAACC tournament starts.
Cross country
Southwestern’s runners had a big day at the NWAACC championships in Vancouver, Wash., over the weekend.
“We did much better than I could have hoped for,” said Southwestern coach Dan Neal. “It was one of those meets that every athlete ran up to or beyond their potential.”
Neal said the Lakers ran well despite slippery conditions.
“We had kids fall two or three times and get up and beat people they were racing,” he said. “Everyone left what they had on the course.”
Francesca Frasier finished sixth in the women’s race, with a time of 19:41 on the 5,000-meter course. Kendra Nelson was 18th (20:30) and Emily Damon 38th (21:36).
The Lakers were sixth in the team race, just two points out of fifth.
In the men’s race, Scott Sanders led the Lakers with a 33rd-place finish in 28:02 in the 8,000-meter race. Andrew Scott was 42nd in 28:37 and Willy Bennett was 53rd in 29:19. The men took 10th in the team race.
Spokane swept the team titles, with the men scoring 32 points and the women 34.
The individual champions were Rigoberto Jimenez for Spokane’s men (25:50) and Laura Carlyle for Whatcom’s women (18:50). Former Siuslaw standout Leah Twombly was third overall for Lane in 19:02. Travis Stevens, another former Viking, was seventh in the men’s race in 26:27. Results are listed at the end of this story.
Soccer
Southwestern’s men’s soccer team reached the NWAACC playoffs, finishing third in the South Region despite having just a 3-13-2 record.
The Lakers lost 3-0 to Chemeketa in the season finale, but advanced to face Bellevue (14-2-2) on Wednesday in the first round of the playoffs. The winner of Wednesday’s match at Bellevue advances to face Walla Walla (14-3-1) on Saturday for a spot in the NWAACC Final Four.
“We’re really looking forward to it,” Southwestern coach Ray Fabien said. “We know we have a really good team. We know if we didn’t have the injuries we’ve had, we would have done a lot better in the win and loss column.
“But this is a new season, and the kids are really excited about it.”
In the regular-season finale, Chemeketa scored all three goals in the second half to pull away from the Lakers.
Wednesday’s playoff game offers a new opportunity.
“The kids are excited,” Fabien said. “They know that they win, they move on, they lose, they go home. Hopefully, they will have the focus and be ready to go.”
Southwestern’s women finished the season with a loss to visiting Clackamas by a 1-0 score. Rachelle Kliewer scored for Clackamas in the 20th minute.
The Lakers ended the year 2-18-0 in NWAACC play.
