Saturday, November 8, 2008 6:14 AM PST

The Zonta Club of Coos Bay Area has chartered a new service club for youth at Marshfield High School in Coos Bay.

Marshfield Z club members will undertake service projects benefiting their school, community, and the world, a press release said. The club attempts to promote the development of students’ leadership ability and good character, and strive for scholastic achievement and the improvement of international understanding through service.

The Zonta Club of Coos Bay Area will act in an advisory capacity for the Marshfield Z club. North Bend resident Terri Turi, who is Coos County’s clerk and new Zonta District 8 governor, presented the charter to the Z club Oct. 1.

The organization also has honored Turi for her new leadership position as governor.

She has been a member of the Coos Bay area club since 1991.  She was installed as District 8 governor at the Zonta International Convention in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, in July 2008, to serve a two-year term.  District 8 includes all of the Zonta clubs in Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, western Montana, British Columbia and Alberta, Canada.

The governor is the link between the district and the Zonta International Board and administers the affairs of the district.  Terri is the third governor elected from the Coos Bay area club. Geraldine Ellis served from 1964 to 1966 and Judge Paula Bechtold served from 1992 to 1994.

Worldwide, Zonta International is a service organization of executives in business and the professions working together to advance the status of women. There are more than 1,200 Zonta clubs in 67 countries.
