NORTH BEND — The city will have to wait just a little longer to demolish a dangerous house it’s waited months to destroy.

North Bend City Administrator Jan Willis said Coos Environmental, which was hired to assess the house, found asbestos in its popcorn-style ceiling covering. The asbestos must be taken out before Fortunes Bulldozing and Grading of Coquille can remove the building from its slipping slope.

“I wasn’t surprised, given the age of the building,” Willis said.

She said if all goes well, the asbestos and the house could be removed sometime next week.

The process will add $3,750 to the $14,441 price tag to demolish the building. Pacific Environmental Group of Eugene will deal with the asbestos.  That is a separate arrangement made by the city.

On Oct. 29, the North Bend City Council awarded the bid to Fortunes to destroy the house after nearly two years of dealing with the issue. The house became a controversial and seemingly endless concern for the city almost two years ago, after staff announced the land beneath it was slipping and the structure could come down, too.
