Winter weather arrives early for state's mountain roads
Friday, November 7, 2008 11:32 AM PST

If you’re traveling across Oregon’s mountains this weekend, be prepared for snow.

The Oregon Department of Transportation says not only are the highways through the Cascades white these days, there’s snow in Southern Oregon’s Siskiyous.

ODOT District Manager Jerry Marmon said that chain restrictions are in place on the Siskiyou Pass near Ashland.

“We placed chain restrictions on the Siskiyou Pass,” Marmon said Thursday.

“Winter arrived a little earlier than usual, so drivers need to carry chains and come prepared.”

Road condition updates are available online at http://www.Tripcheck.com or by calling 511. Road and weather information can be accessed toll-free within Oregon by dialing (800) 977-6368.

California road conditions are online at the Caltrans Web site, http://www.dot.ca.gov/cgi-bin/roads.cgi or by calling 511 within California or (800) 427-7623 outside the state.

“If you can delay your travel until after the storm passes, you can save yourself a lot of grief,” Marmon said.

For those who must travel, there is information at ODOT’s Web site, http://www.oregon.gov/ODOT about driving safely and Oregon’s tire chain laws.
