Sports Briefs: Romo back practicing
By The Associated Press

IRVING, Texas — Tony Romo was back under center at practice, once again zipping passes to Terrell Owens.
Expect him to be doing so the next time the Dallas Cowboys play, too.
Romo’s return from a broken pinkie on his throwing hand is coming along as expected. The clunky cast he wore the last three weeks has been replaced by a small splint covering only the pinkie. It’s as much for support as protection, and he wasn’t even wearing it between a walkthrough and a practice Wednesday afternoon.
Romo was hurt during a loss to Arizona on Oct. 12. He practiced a little that week and tried to play in the following game, but realized during warmups that his bulky bandage prevented him from properly controlling the ball and has sat out ever since.
Price won’t be back at Kansas State in 2009
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas State coach Ron Prince will not return for the 2009 season, pushed out after failing to rebuild the Wildcats into a Big 12 contender.
Prince took over for Bill Snyder in 2006, his first head-coaching job after 14 years at six different schools. He never lived up to the standard Snyder set, going 16-18 in 21⁄2 seasons in Manhattan, including 4-5 this year.
Snyder was a consistent winner in 17 years as Kansas State’s coach, turning a team that won one game from 1987-89 into one that won at least 10 games seven times and reached a bowl game in 12 straight seasons starting in 1992.
He retired after a 5-6 season in 2006, handing the program off to Prince, Virginia’s offensive coordinator the previous three years.
Raiders let Hall go after disappointing run
ALAMEDA, Calif — DeAngelo Hall’s disappointing stint with the Oakland Raiders came to an early finish.
The Raiders waived Hall on Wednesday, less than eight months after they traded for the former Pro Bowl cornerback and gave him a $70 million contract.
The acquisition of Hall from Atlanta in March was a big part of Oakland’s plans to rebuild its defense. But the move has backfired. The Raiders gave up a second-round pick to acquire Hall and also gave him a seven-year contract.

Dodgers offer Manny Ramirez huge contract
DANA POINT, Calif. — The Dodgers want to keep Manny Ramirez in Los Angeles, and they made an offer that proves just how much.
General manager Ned Colletti said the Dodgers’ pitch to the free-agent slugger would give him the second-highest average salary in the sport behind Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez.
Rodriguez currently has the top average at $27.5 million under the 10-year deal he agreed to before last season. Mets pitcher Johan Santana is second at $22.9 million under the six-season deal he agreed to this year.
Gwynn signs contract at San Diego State
SAN DIEGO — Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn signed a three-year contract to remain the baseball coach at San Diego State, his alma mater.
The former San Diego Padres star is 173-190 in six seasons at SDSU.
“Now that the contract has been signed, we can move forward and concentrate on our aim of making Aztec baseball a perennial contender both in the Mountain West Conference as well as nationally,” Gwynn said in a statement released by the school Wednesday.
“I remain fully committed to my job here at San Diego State and look forward to working with my staff and players toward these goals.”

Williams sisters get wins in Qatar
DOHA, Qatar — Venus and Serena Williams won contrasting round-robin matches at the Sony Ericsson Championships on Wednesday and next face a familiar opponent: each other.
Venus endured a struggle against Elena Dementieva 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 to win her second match, and Serena romped past Dinara Safina 6-4, 6-1 in her first at the season-ending WTA Tour championships.
Today, they meet for the 18th time in their professional careers, with Serena holding a 9-8 edge.
In Wednesday’s other match, Vera Zvonareva defeated an ailing Ana Ivanovic 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-4, avenging a lopsided loss to the Serbian in the final last month at Linz, Austria.
