A quick joy ride went terribly wrong for a 12-year-old boy Wednesday, when he lost control of his mother’s car and rammed it into his family’s home.

At about 7 a.m. Coos County sheriff’s deputies received a report of the crash, involving a 2003 Honda Acura at 93406 Alabama Lane in Coos Bay.

Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Pat Downing said the vehicle pushed the house partially off its foundation, along with the chimney. The car also was totalled, he added.

Downing said the case is under investigation, and he doesn’t know if anyone will be cited.

“It’s up to the officer what he’s going to do,” he said.

To Steve Pickering. I don't know where you get YOUR facts but it IS legal for parents to serve their minor kids booze in their OWN HOME. The law says the kids can get an M.I.P. if they LEAVE the home after drinking so get YOUR facts straight YOURSELF. And on the Acura comment, Acura is a brand name used by the Japanese car manufacturer Honda in the US, Canada and Hong Kong since March 1986 to market luxury automobiles and near-luxury vehicles. Think and KNOWING are two different things.

Well, here its is almost 3 months later and my house is still a disaster.....no apology letter from the kid, just a contracter telling me they are working on it???? This is total bull.......and for the wench that said to me to quit whining and let the insurance companys fix it you obviously are a complete moran!! and belong on the bottom of my shoe.....so SHUT UP!!!!!!!!!

Nick wrote on Nov 13, 2008 4:17 PM:

A 12-year-old who does something like this should be punished severely. Even if the police don't do anything to him (though, since he hit a NEIGHBOR'S house at a high-enough rate of speed to KILL someone, they are within their rights to do so), the parents certainly should.

People need to realize that 12-year-olds are PERFECTLY cognizant and PERFECTLY capable of being punished. They understand when they're doing something bad or dangerous (or they're fools, and weren't raised properly)... they aren't ignorant (not in an insulting sense, in a lack of life experience sense) toddlers that should need to be watched at every turn... 12-year-olds SHOULD know better.

If your kid is too stupid (that is, in fact, an insult) to be left alone at the age of 12, because he's this dangerous, then perhaps you've already failed as a parent. Do the world a favor, and make sure he CANNOT do something like this again.

A hug and a time-out seem appropriate, as long as they are preceeded by a good spanking (oh my goodness, how brutal.) Real parents know how and when to spank (not beat) an errant child.

OK you liberals, now start piling on with your insipid comments about damage to the kid's psychological health yada, yada, yada.

Geez, people, kids make mistakes. Not every kid that messes up is destined for prison... But treat them that way and they may be.

And not every kid that messes up has bad parents. (I'd be willing to bet everyone here has messed up in various ways. Would you like to tell about all of the mistakes you've made and we can all judge you and your parents?)

I have faith that the punishment will fit the crime, with due and appropriate consideration given to the history and details of the situation. And I'm glad that no one got hurt.

There is nothing wrong with Donna coming on here and correcting The World's crappy journalism. She was a victim here, and out of ALL of us, deserves to say a thing or two.

Besides, The World leaves the names of their "journalists" off now for a reason, and it certainly isn't because they're talented.

Thanks Donna, for correcting the story... Or at least the online version of it for those that read the comments.

Wonder if The World will have the class to print a correction?

Oregon law prohibits anyone, except a parent or legal guardian, to provide alcohol to a
minor or juvenile. A minor is any person under the age of 21 and a juvenile is any person
under the age of 18. Parents or guardians may legally provide alcohol only to their minor
child in a private residence when accompanying their child. A parent cannot transfer this
responsibility to another adult or to a public place. If you allow your property and/or
home to be used for a party where minors consume alcohol, other than your children in
your presence, you may have to forfeit property and may be issued a citation to circuit
court.

My brother at 19 was learning how to drive. Instead of pushing the brake he pushed the gas slammed into the neighbors concrete wall. The wall was fine but his car was not. Hello you dont know if this was an accident.
I suppose your kid are absuletly perfect little angels and do NOTHING wrong EVER, and if they did WHERE WERE YOU. Children make mistakes.

SMD wrote on Nov 11, 2008 8:25 PM:

My heart goes to the home owner and the parents not the child!:
The problem with children these days is that parents have no rights to discipline them. Aside from alienating your own child, which is cruel, there really isn't much you can do. Sure, you can ground them but how terrible is that really? They still get to go to school and hang out with friends maybe watch some TV at home or just bug you until you let them out.
Frankly, I truly fear our children...they have MORE rights than their parents when it comes to discipling bad behavior. In my opinion making them almost invincible to consequences.
So please, don't blame the parents because even if they were standing right there screaming at him there really isn't anything they could have done if he decided to do it anyway.
Good luck getting the house fixed though. With the economy the way it is I would be surprised if the insurance companies pay for damages immediately or completely. After your deductible they will probably expect you to file a claim against the childs family...double wammy for the parents.

OMG wrote on Nov 11, 2008 12:35 PM:

Wow, what the heck are we talking about whether or not minors can drink with their parents? Alchohol was not involved so how about getting off that tangent!
I am sure this boy is in alot of trouble and yes, he should be punished but if he has never been in trouble before I think the punishment should be decided at home.
And one more thing, my son is 10 and there is NO way I can keep an eye on him every second of the day. Until a child is out of hand without guidance from the parents we should show some respect and give Mom & Dad a chance to deal with their son accordingly.
Do you have any idea what it would be like to have DHS or some other government controlled entity (juvenile courts etc.) in "your" family's business when it could have been handled without? I have seen it happen to people and believe me when I say you would not wish it on an enemy unless they really deserve it. Once they enter your life....Good Luck getting them back out.

Children need to be taught that there is a defference between Grand Theft Auto IV for the Playstation and real life. A simple talk beforehand about the concequencesI think woulda solved this.

Maybe some time in Juvy Detention is in order. Or at least handcuff him and put in cop car for a while.

Big question is. Will the insurance cover it? They would just call it an act of riot or something and it not be covered. Then you got problems.

This is to Tony Shook. Please refrain from giving incorrect advice. Although some states do allow parents or guardians to furnish alcohol to miners, Oregon is not one of those states. Before everyone piles on, alcohol was not involved in this case. I am only addressing Tony's response. In Oregon it is always (ALWAYS) against the law to furnish alcohol to miners including your own children, even in the privacy of your home. It is even questionable if minors can partake of communion of both species (Bread and Wine) in the state of Oregon. Tony's statement is a Myth.

Some of you are quick to blame the parents. Just because you have rules does not mean that kids will follow! Get real, the child was 12! Driving the car was probably not in the rule book. At least in my home with my kids it was note. It is unfortunate for the neighbors that they are inconvenienced because of his action. It would not be to hard to enter anyones home and get car keys....they sit on a table, hang on a hook, or just grab them from a purse. HIGH RATE OF SPEED: Do you really think he actually was registering that?

I am glad no one was hurt and yes the parents of this child will have to pay for the damage. Has anyone writing on here ever made a mistake? Children tend to make mistakes. That is why they are protected under the law. He wasnt selling meth on the courthouse steps. Hopefuly his parents are able to straighten his butt out. I'd rather see him learn and grow up to be a man, instead of a product of juvy. Then he would just move upstairs to C block. Why is everyone crying for this kids blood, you got bigger problems in Coquille.

It is NOT always the parent's fault!! You can have a good, wholesome christian family, with excellent morals, doing the best they can to teach their children what they know, and at some point, the kid is going to realize that they are their own person, and do what they want to do... As for where the mother was-the boy is 12! How many 12 year olds need to be babysat while playing outside?? Since he IS 12, I think he should do some work for these people in fixing up the house. Or doing whatever he can. It shouldn't be totally up to the parents to pay for everything...

Thank goodness for house insurance! To bad there was not better parenting going on for the kid!

Native of Coos Bay wrote on Nov 10, 2008 10:06 AM:

So the kid destroyed the neighbors house? The parents need to pay every single dime to make the repairs, and the kid needs to go to Juvenile Hall to get some ACTUAL parenting, since he's obviously lacking any at all at this point. This is where career criminals come from, kids who have no parenting and get a slap on the wrist when they do hundreds of thousands in damage to other people's property.

I understand parents should keep watch over their children but how many of you are able to be with your kid and watch him constantly 24 hours a day? Sure what the kid did isn't right, but sometimes it's not the fault of the parent that a child screws up. It should be up to the parents whether they press charges or not. And, other than that, I'll bet the kid's sorry he did it. Consequences? The house got knocked off the FOUNDATION!!! I don't think this kid's going to hear the end of it.

I think all these children should be punished, so not to do these things anymore. They put other people's lives in danger. I think parents need better control of some children.
