Central eliminated North Bend from the Class 4A boys soccer playoffs Tuesday, beating the visiting Bulldogs 2-0 in a second-round playoff game.
“They beat us to the ball quite a bit today,” said North Bend coach Blaine Deming. “They taught us what we need to know to win in the championships.”
The Panthers got a goal in the first half by Christian Gonzales and one in the second half by Jose Martinez.
The Bulldogs beat the Panthers in the playoffs two years ago, but most of the players from that Central team were young, and still playing this season.
“We did as well as we could with what we have,” Deming said. “They were just older and wiser.”
Central had a better offensive attack and passed the ball better than the Bulldogs, Deming said.
North Bend was in the playoffs after missing last year for the first time since dropping down to the Far West League in 2002. The Bulldogs finished second in the league standings, and had an overall record of 9-4-2.
“We did a great job,” Deming said. “It was a great season.”
Central, which faces Cottage Grove in the quarterfinals Saturday, improved to 13-0-1 on the season.
Bruins lose
Brookings-Harbor’s boys and girls soccer teams were eliminated with second-round losses at home Tuesday.
The Brookings-Harbor girls lost 5-0 to traditional power Oregon Episcopal.
The boys fell 3-1 to North Marion. Linden Loren scored the goal for Brookings-Harbor, giving the Bruins a 1-0 halftime lead. North Marion won with three straight goals in the second half.
Class 5A
North Eugene and Churchill advanced both their boys and girls teams to the Class 5A quarterfinals.
Churchill’s boys topped The Dalles Wahtonka 4-1, while the Lancer girls beat Cleveland 1-0.
North Eugene’s teams swept Madison, the boys winning 3-0 and the girls winning 8-0.
