Coos Bay

Coos Bay police arrested a Coos Bay man and woman Friday on drug charges.

At 3:25 p.m. Southwestern Oregon Community College security called police requesting assistance investigating a report of an on-campus student in possession of stolen property, according to a Coos Bay police release.

During the investigation, officers contacted a female student, along with her mother and male friend, who were helping her move out of student housing.

Officers arrested the mother, Roberta A. Wright, 38, on an Oregon State Police and Coos Bay Warrant on the original charges of unlawful possession of methamphetamine and issued a citation on possession of less than an ounce of marijuana. She was taken to the Coos County jail where she was released Monday on her own recognizance to appear in the Coos County Circuit Court on Dec. 8.

Officers also arrested Ronald L. Walter, 38, on a charge of unlawful possession of methamphetamine and a felony probation violation.

He was taken to Coos County jail, where he is being held without bail.

Police recovered a stolen laptop. The investigation is continuing, the release said.

Coos River area

Oregon State Police arrested a North Bend man Sunday near Daniels Creek Road on several warrant charges, including failure to register as a sex offender.

According to an OSP press release, at about 5:30 p.m., troopers contacted a man who appeared to be hunting. After checking the man’s criminal background, officers arrested Lane W. Major, 25, on charges of felon in possession of a firearm, failure to register as a sex offender and hunting without a license. He was taken to Coos County jail, where he was released on Sunday.

Correction

An article in Monday’s police report misstated the circumstances surrounding the arrest of a North Bend man over the weekend.

According to a North Bend police log, at about 8:30 p.m. Saturday, officers responded to an assault report at 2220 16th St. No arrests were made at that time.

On Sunday, Oregon State Police contacted the suspect, who agreed to turn himself in, according to an OSP press release. Troopers took Douglas L. Strebendt, 33, into custody on a charge of fourth-degree assault. He was taken to Coos County jail where he was booked and released.
